- Palm Springs & the Deserts: Similar vibe to Death Valley, weather-wise, but maybe a bit more, you know, ‘put together.’ Palm Springs is a bit more resorty. But the whole desert area, Joshua Tree included, seemed like a solid bet for sunshine when other places are gloomy. I thought about the kind of quiet you get in the desert.
- The Coast (SoCal specifically): I love the coast. Who doesn’t? But Northern California in Jan? Bit of a gamble with rain, and I wasn’t in the mood to get soaked. So, my focus shifted south. San Diego, Laguna Beach, places like that. They tend to have milder, drier winters. I remember a trip to LA years ago in winter and it was surprisingly pleasant.

Making the Calls – What I Ended Up Doing (Or Planning To Do)

It wasn’t about one single “best” place, because California’s just too darn big and varied for that. It was about what I needed for this particular January escape.
Death Valley really stuck with me. A buddy of mine, this guy who’s super into astrophotography, he practically lives there in winter. He showed me his pictures from a January trip – the stars, man, you wouldn’t believe it. He said the clarity is just insane. And he talked about the silence. That really got me. Sometimes you just need that profound quiet, you know? So, I penciled that in as a serious contender, maybe even the main event.
Then, for a bit of contrast, I leaned towards San Diego. I figured after the raw, stark beauty of the desert, some ocean air and a more relaxed city vibe would be good. I could get some decent sun, walk by the ocean, maybe find some killer fish tacos. It’s pretty laid back, and historically, the weather there in January is some of the most stable in the state. Less chance of getting rained out there compared to, say, further up the PCH, which felt like too much of a risk for my limited time.
I kinda put Palm Springs on the back burner for this trip, only because Death Valley had that stronger pull for a more immersive nature experience. Beautiful, for sure, but I knew they’d be snow-covered and require a whole different type of gear and preparation, and that just wasn’t the vibe I was chasing for this particular January.
