My Go with the Curling Diffuser

Alright, so I finally got around to trying out one of those curling diffuser attachments for my hairdryer. Heard people talking about them, figured I’d see what the fuss was about myself. It’s just been sitting in the box for a bit, you know how it is.

So, here’s what I did. First, I washed my hair, standard routine, nothing special. Towel dried it a bit so it wasn’t dripping wet. Then I grabbed some curl mousse I had lying around, scrunched that in pretty good. Put the diffuser thingy onto the end of my hairdryer. Felt a bit clunky, honestly.

Then came the awkward part. I flipped my head upside down, felt a bit dizzy for a sec. Turned the dryer on, kept it on low heat and low speed, like I read somewhere. Took a section of hair and kinda scooped it into the diffuser bowl, pushed it up towards my scalp. Held it there for maybe a minute? Then moved to another section. Did this over and over. It took way longer than just blasting it dry, that’s for sure. My arm started to ache a bit holding the dryer up like that.

  • Added mousse
  • Attached diffuser
  • Flipped head over
  • Dried section by section on low

It’s kinda funny when you think about all the tools we collect for just one part of our body, right? Like hair. There’s the straightener, the curling wand, the old-school rollers my grandma used, crimpers from the 90s probably hiding somewhere, and now this diffuser. It’s like a whole arsenal just to make hair do something different than it naturally does. My cabinet under the sink is a testament to this collection.

This whole gadget thing reminds me of when I helped my buddy move out of his old apartment last year. He had boxes labeled ‘kitchen stuff’, ‘clothes’, ‘books’, you know, the usual. But then he had three boxes just labeled ‘cables’. Seriously. Old chargers, weird connectors for things he didn’t even own anymore, tangled messes of USBs from like, 2005. We spent a good hour just trying to figure out what half of it was before deciding to just toss most of it. He didn’t even remember getting most of them.

Seeing all that useless stuff made me think. Do we really need all these specialized things? Maybe sometimes just the basic tool and a bit of know-how is enough. Like with this diffuser. Yeah, it helped my waves clump together a bit more than usual, gave it some volume. But was it life-changing? Nah. And it took forever. Maybe I just need more practice with it, get the technique down better.

So, the final verdict? The curling diffuser did kinda work. It produced waves, alright. But the time it took, and the arm ache… I don’t know if it’s going to be my new go-to. Maybe for a special occasion if I feel like putting in the effort. Most days, letting it air dry or a quick rough dry still seems way easier. It’s just another tool in the box, I guess. We’ll see if it stays on the counter or ends up buried like those old cables.
