Alright friends, so today I decided I needed a little glam pick-me-up, nothing crazy complicated, you know? Saw Katie Holmes rocking those effortless waves and figured, hey, I can probably do that. Found this tutorial called something like “How To Style Katie Holmes Hairstyles Like A Pro In Simple Steps” and thought, perfect! Simple steps are definitely my speed. Here’s how my own kitchen sink battle went down:

The Prep Stuff (Or, Digging Through My Messy Drawer)

First thing, I grabbed my stuff. Easier said than done, honestly. My bathroom counter is… well, chaotic. Dug out my trusty thin flat iron – found it buried under a half-dry hair masque tub. Found a random heat protectant spray that smelled vaguely like coconuts. Good enough! Got my regular mousse and my big, fat round brush. Hair was freshly washed and mostly air-dried, which is a win.

Actually Trying To Do The Thing

Step 1: Blowdry with the round brush. Okay, easy. Flipped my head upside down, sprayed some heat protectant all over. Grabbed my round brush and started drying sections, pulling up and out, trying to get some root lift. Got my arm tired about halfway through. Realized I missed huge sections underneath. Had to go back. Kinda got some volume happening? Maybe? Didn’t feel super glam yet.

Step 2: Apply mousse for hold. Pumped a blob of mousse into my palm – felt like too much. Rubbed my hands together like I was trying to start a fire. Scrunched it mostly into the ends. Tried not to touch the roots too much. Hoped I didn’t overdo it.

Step 3: The Curling Iron Part (The Scary Part). This is where the ‘pro’ in the title started feeling like a challenge. Fired up my flat iron to a medium heat. Started grabbing smallish sections. I clamped the iron about an inch or two from the root, wrapped the hair under the iron away from my face, then slowly slid it down while twisting my wrist – tried to make that nice, slow “C” shape. Sounds smooth, right? Reality: I burned my finger on the first section. Dropped the section halfway down. Got the angle all wrong on another piece so it curled straight back towards my head, not away. Had to redo those. Swore under my breath a couple of times. Took forever. My arm was dying again. Mostly focused on the mid-lengths and ends.

Step 4: Finger-Combing & Scrunching. FINALLY got all sections kinda looking wavy. Turned off the flat iron before I hurt myself again. Then just dug my fingers into my hair and shook it out gently, like the tutorial said. Scrunched it upwards a bit more to loosen those curls up. Some bits were springy, others were barely wavy. It looked… messy. But maybe strategically messy? I sprayed some hairspray from way far away – didn’t want it looking crunchy or wet.

Was It Worth The Arm Pain?

Stared at the mirror. Did I look like Katie Holmes? Umm… no. Not even close. Her hair always looks expensive and perfect. Mine looked like… my hair, but wavy! BUT, surprisingly, I liked it! It was more voluminous, had gentle waves that looked kinda undone in a nice way. Definitely better than my usual messy bun. Felt sorta polished without trying too hard. Took way longer than ‘simple steps’ implied, and it didn’t feel very ‘pro’ while wrestling the flat iron, but the end result was actually nice enough to make me feel pretty good.

So yeah, it worked! Not a perfect Katie knock-off, but a solid, easy-ish hairstyle win. Just be ready for some practice with that flat iron technique and maybe have an ice pack for your arm ready.
