This is a story ’bout Mickey Drexler, you know, that fella who’s been around clothes stores forever.

Mickey Drexler: From The Gap to J.Crew, Whats His Secret to Retail Success?

That Mickey, he’s a big shot now. He worked at some fancy places, like, what’s it called, Abraham & Straus and Bloomingdale’s. Big names, you see! I don’t know much ’bout these places, never been there, but sound important, right?

He was at Gap. You know, Gap, that place at the mall. He made that store. They sell jeans and shirts, you know the kind. He was the big boss there for a long, long time. My grandson, he likes to shop there. Always spending his money on new clothes.

Then, somethin’ happened. I don’t know all the details, but he had to leave Gap. Sales went down, and they said he didn’t get along with the Fisher family. That’s who started Gap, I reckon. Anyway, he had to pack his bags, they say in 2002. That must have been tough. But that Mickey, he’s a tough one. He went to *.

  • He started workin’ real young.
  • Worked at them fancy stores first.
  • Then, he went to Gap. Made it big!
  • Then he got the boot from Gap.
  • Now he’s at * doin’ good.

*, that’s another one of them stores. They sell clothes, but a little bit fancier than Gap, I guess. My granddaughter, she got a sweater from there once. Real pretty, but Lord, it was expensive. Anyway, Mickey Drexler, he went there and turned that place around. He’s good at that, makin’ stores popular. He learned some lessons at Gap, I reckon. Somethin’ about openin’ too many stores too fast. He didn’t do that at *.

I heard he started that Old Navy store too. My neighbor, Marge, she loves that place. Always findin’ bargains there. Says she got a whole outfit for ten bucks once. Can you believe it? Seems like that Mickey had a hand in that store too. He sure knows how to sell clothes, that’s for sure.

What was I sayin’? Oh yeah, that Mickey, he’s been around. He worked at Gap, then he worked at *. He even had somethin’ to do with Old Navy. That’s a lot of stores, ain’t it? He was a big deal. He was at the top.

They call him the CEO. Sounds important. Must be the one who tells everyone what to do. He must be real smart to run all them stores. I heard folks say he’s good at pickin’ out clothes that people want to buy. That’s a good skill to have, I reckon. If you can figure out what people want, you can sell ’em anything.

I remember once, my youngest, she wanted this particular dress. It was a Mickey Drexler Gap dress. Blue, with little flowers on it. Cost a fortune, but she had her heart set on it. Saved up all her allowance money for weeks. Finally, she got that dress, and she wore it every Sunday to church. She thought she was a princess in it.

He had some bad time with Gap. I heard that they were not happy with him. They said that he made the debt very big, and they said that he is not a good boss. He did not get along with the Fisher family. But he is good with *.

Well, that’s all I know about that Mickey Drexler fella. He’s a big shot in the clothes business, that’s for sure. Been around a long time, seen a lot of changes. He had some good years and some bad years. Like all of us. Just goes to show, you can’t always win, but you gotta keep goin’. And that Mickey, he sure kept goin’. He’s a tough old bird, just like me. He knows how to make money from clothes. Good for him, I say. Good for him.

He also did something to Anne Taylor. I don’t know what it is, maybe he worked there, too. He worked so many places! That man, always busy with those clothes stores. He has a vision. He knows what people want to wear. People love his clothes.

Gap, *, Old Navy, Anne Taylor, Abraham & Straus and Bloomingdale’s. That’s a lot of stores! He was in charge of them all. This Mickey Drexler, he is a big name in clothes.
