So, I finally did it. Went for the long pixie. I’d been thinking about it for ages, you know? My hair was getting on my nerves, always in my face, taking forever to dry. Just a pain, really. I kept seeing these cool pictures online, and thought, “Yeah, I could rock that.” Or at least, I hoped I could.

The Decision and the Chop
Honestly, the decision part was the hardest. I went back and forth. One day I was all for it, the next I was panicking. But then I just woke up one morning and thought, “Sod it, it’s just hair. It’ll grow back if it’s a disaster.” So, I booked an appointment at a local place. Nothing fancy, just a regular salon. I didn’t even bring a million pictures, just one or two on my phone to give them a general idea.
I sat in that chair, and the stylist asked the usual, “Are you sure?” I just nodded. Then the first snip happened. And then a lot more snipping. It felt weird, watching clumps of my old, long hair fall to the floor. For a second, I thought, “What have I done?” But it was too late to turn back then, wasn’t it?
Figuring It Out – The “Practice” Part
When she spun me around to face the mirror, it was… different. A good different, I think. Lighter, for sure. My neck felt cold, which was a new one. The stylist showed me a couple of ways to quickly style it, but honestly, most of it went in one ear and out the other. I was still just trying to get used to seeing myself with so much less hair.
The real practice started the next morning. Oh boy. My first attempt at styling it myself was, let’s just say, an adventure. It stuck up in places I didn’t want it to, and lay flat where I wanted some oomph. I quickly learned a few things:
- A bit of product goes a long way. Too much and I looked like I’d stuck my finger in a socket.
- Blow-drying actually became kind of important, even for short hair, to get it to sit right.
- Sometimes, just running my hands through it with a tiny bit of wax was the best look. Less is more, sometimes.
I spent a good week just messing with it every morning. Trying different partings, different products – wax, pomade, a bit of mousse. Some days it looked great, other days it was a bit of a wild mess. But that’s the thing with a new cut, isn’t it? You’ve got to live with it for a bit, get to know it. It’s like breaking in a new pair of shoes.

So, The Verdict?
It’s been a few weeks now, and I’m pretty happy with it. It’s so much easier to manage, overall. Wash and go is almost a reality, which I love. Sure, I have the occasional bad hair day, but who doesn’t? And I’ve saved a ton of time not having to deal with long, tangly hair. Definitely less faff.
I’m still playing around with styling, finding new ways to make it look a bit different. It’s actually kind of fun. Would I do it again? Yeah, I think so. It’s a bit freeing, chopping it all off. If you’re thinking about it, I’d say go for it. Just be prepared for that initial “whoa” moment and a bit of a learning curve with the styling. It’s all part of the process.
