What is a Physical Sunscreen? (Simple Guide & Benefits)

Date:

Okay, so I’ve been seeing “physical sunscreen” thrown around a lot lately, and honestly, I was kinda confused. What the heck is it? Is it, like, sunscreen you have to wrestle with? So, I decided to do some digging and, more importantly, try it out for myself.

What is a Physical Sunscreen? (Simple Guide & Benefits)

My Little Experiment

First, I grabbed my usual sunscreen – the one I’ve been using for years. It’s a chemical sunscreen, the kind that absorbs into your skin. I’ve always just used it without thinking too much about it.

Then, I went and bought a physical sunscreen. The main thing I noticed was that it listed “zinc oxide” and “titanium dioxide” as the active ingredients. Apparently, those are the key players in physical sunscreens.

Next up, the application. This was… different. My usual sunscreen? Smooth, easy to rub in, disappears in seconds. This physical stuff? Woah. It was thick, kinda pasty, and definitely left a white cast on my skin. I felt like I was putting on clown makeup!

I spent a good few minutes really rubbing it in, trying to get rid of that white sheen. It got better, but it was still kinda noticeable. I looked in the mirror and thought, “Okay, this is gonna take some getting used to.”

The Day Test

I wore the physical sunscreen all day. I went outside, did my usual errands, and just generally lived my life. One thing I noticed right away: my skin felt… different. Not bad, just… protected. It was like I had a light layer of something on, which, I guess, I did!

Checking the results

I washed off and I was able to easily clean the sunscreen off with a gentle cleanser. After that I made sure to take a very close look at my skin.

The Verdict (So Far)

Okay, so after my little experiment, here’s what I’m thinking. Physical sunscreen is definitely different. It’s not as cosmetically elegant as my usual chemical sunscreen – that white cast is a real thing. But, it does feel like it’s providing a solid barrier against the sun, which does protect me from sunburn and that’s probably the whole point, right?

I’m not totally sold on switching over completely yet. I think I’ll keep using both and see how I feel. Maybe I’ll use the physical sunscreen on days when I know I’ll be outside a lot, and my regular sunscreen for everyday use. It’s all about finding what works, I guess!
