Alright, so today I wanted to share a bit about this whole “reference number” thing. Not like, what it is, but my actual experience trying to dig one up recently. It was a bit of a palaver, let me tell you.

I’d applied for this local community grant, you know, trying to get some funding for a small project. Filled out all the forms, hit submit, and got that little “thank you for your application” message on the screen. Silly me, I just closed the window. Didn’t even think to screenshot it, which, spoiler alert, was my first mistake.
A week later, I wanted to check the status. They said you could track it online, but you needed – you guessed it – a reference number. So, my hunt began.
Where I thought it would be…
First, I dived into my email. I figured, okay, they must have sent a confirmation email, and the reference number would be right there at the top, nice and bold. I searched my inbox, my spam folder, even the trash. Found the email, a nice little “We’ve received your application” note. But was the reference number there? Nope. Not a sausage. Just a generic message.
Then I remembered the submission page. I kicked myself for not saving it. Usually, that final confirmation screen after you submit something online has the all-important number plastered on it. I even tried going back in my browser history, hoping to pull up the cached page. No luck there either. My browser had obviously cleared it out.
Trying to find it online… the hard way.
Okay, plan C. I went to their main website. They had a portal, a “track your application” section. Looked promising. I logged in with the details I used for the application. Clicked around for what felt like ages. Dashboard, my applications, submitted forms… nothing. I couldn’t find a list of my applications that actually showed a reference number. It was like they were hiding it on purpose!

I found a FAQ section. Typed in “find reference number,” “application ID,” “tracking number.” Got a load of unhelpful articles about what a reference number is used for, but not how to find yours if you’ve, well, lost it or never got it properly in the first place.
I was getting pretty frustrated at this point. It shouldn’t be this hard, right? You’d think they’d want you to be able to check on things.
- Checked all my saved documents, just in case I’d downloaded a copy of the filled form.
- Racked my brain trying to remember if it was mentioned verbally during any initial inquiry.
- Even tried guessing common formats, but that was just silly.
My next step was going to be actually calling them, which I always dread. You know, hold music, being passed around. Or even worse, having to go down to their office. I saw on their site something about visiting in person for complex queries, and I really didn’t want it to come to that just to find a number.
Finally, I was rummaging through my download folder for something else entirely, and I stumbled upon a PDF. It wasn’t the application form itself, but a sort of “submission receipt” that I didn’t even remember downloading. And there it was, tucked away in tiny print at the bottom of the second page: “Your Application Reference: XXXXXX”.
Victory! But man, what a runaround. So, lesson learned from my end: screenshot everything, download everything, and check the small print. These reference numbers are like gold dust when you need them, and sometimes they make you work to find ’em.
