My Saint Laurent Bag Saga at Selfridges

Alright, so I finally did it. I went and got myself one of those Saint Laurent bags from Selfridges. You see them everywhere, right? Or at least, you see the idea of them everywhere. And I’d been thinking about it for a while, not gonna lie.

First, I just prowled the Selfridges website. For days, I think. Just scrolling. Clicking. Zooming in on the stitching. You know the drill. They make it look so easy, don’t they? Just ‘add to basket’ and boom, luxury. But it’s never that simple in your head, is it?

I had a few models in mind, the usual suspects really:

  • The Loulou, of course.
  • Maybe a Kate with the tassel.
  • Even glanced at the Sac De Jour for a hot second, but nah, too structured for what I wanted.

I kept flipping between tabs, comparing sizes, what would actually fit my phone and, I don’t know, a small book. Practicality tries to shout over the ‘ooh shiny’ voice, you know?

Then I decided, no, I needed to physically go there. See it in the flesh. Feel it. Selfridges on a weekend is, well, it’s an experience. Packed. You gotta have your game face on. I headed straight for the shiny corner, the YSL bit. It’s all very… black and gold. Very on brand.

There it was. The one I’d sort of landed on online (it was a Loulou, small size, black on black, if you’re curious). I asked to see it. The sales assistant was decent, not hovering too much, which I appreciated. I stood there, holding this bag, feeling the weight of it. And the price tag, yeah, that also has a weight. You do that mental calculation, right? ‘How many hours of work is this?’ or ‘What else could I buy?’ It’s a whole internal monologue.

But you know what? I just went for it. Said, ‘I’ll take it.’ Felt like a bit of a moment. They swished it away to wrap it up. The whole fancy paper, ribbon, the big yellow bag. It’s part of the theatre, isn’t it? And I bought into it.

Walking out with that carrier bag, I won’t lie, it felt pretty good. A bit ridiculous, but good. Got it home, did the whole unboxing ritual. Sat it on my bed. Just looked at it. Yeah, it’s a nice bag. It better be, for what it costs.

I’ve used it a few times now. It holds my stuff. It looks good. Is it life-changing? Nah. Is it a nice thing to have? Sure. It’s one of those things, you build it up in your head, and then it’s just… a really well-made bag. But the process, the going and getting it, that was the main event, I think. Selfridges made it smooth enough. No real complaints there. Just an empty wallet and a new bag to show for it. That’s the deal you make, I guess.
