How to start your own beauty collection? Simple tips for beginners to get the essentials.

So, I wanted to share a bit about this little project I’ve been tinkering with, my “beauty collection” as I’ve started calling it. It wasn’t some grand plan, not at all. It really just kinda started because, well, I was feeling a bit swamped by all the noise, you know? Needed a space with just… nice things to look at.

Getting Started – The Messy Beginning

First off, I just started saving stuff. Like, anything that caught my eye. Pictures online, little snippets, colors. My desktop became a warzone, seriously. Folders inside folders, weird file names. It was supposed to be relaxing, but finding anything was a nightmare. I’d save something, then forget where I put it, or why I even saved it in the first place. A real chaotic situation.

Then I thought, okay, maybe those online pinboard things are the way to go. Everyone else seems to use them, right? So I tried that for a bit. And yeah, it was okay for some things. But honestly, it felt a bit… much. Too many notifications, too much pressure to make it look “curated” for others, if you know what I mean. It wasn’t really my quiet corner. It felt like another chore.

Figuring Out My Own Way

I realized pretty quick that if this beauty collection thing was gonna work for me, it had to be super simple and totally private. No fuss. So, I went back to basics, but with a bit more thought this time.

I decided to stick with my own computer, but I got ruthless with organizing. I made a main folder, just called “Beauty Stash” – nothing fancy. Inside, I started making really broad category folders. Think things like:

  • Colors I Like
  • Textures & Patterns
  • Calm Scenes
  • Things That Just Make Me Smile

Super vague, I know! But that was the point. No rigid rules. If I liked it, and it gave me a good feeling, in it went. I spent a good weekend just dragging and dropping from my old messy folders, deleting a ton of stuff I didn’t care about anymore.

The Actual “Collecting” Part

The process now is pretty straightforward. When I see something, maybe an image online, or even a color combination in a magazine, I just grab it. Screenshot, save, whatever. Then, maybe once a week, or whenever I feel like it, I’ll go through my “inbox” – which is just a temporary folder on my desktop – and sort things into those main categories. Sometimes I add little notes to the file names, like “moody_blue_ocean_*” or “warm_woolen_texture_*”. It’s not rocket science, just what works for me.

The key thing I learned was not to overthink it. Is it “art”? Is it “trendy”? Who cares! Does it make me feel a bit better, a bit inspired, or just a bit calmer? Yes? Then it goes in the collection. Sometimes I just scroll through one of the folders when I’m having my morning coffee. It’s like a little visual pick-me-up I made for myself.

It’s not perfect, and it’s always changing. Some weeks I add loads, other times nothing. But it’s mine, and it’s simple, and honestly, that’s made all the difference. No more feeling overwhelmed, just a little digital (and sometimes physical, I have a small box of scraps too) collection of things I find beautiful. And that’s pretty much it. My very own, no-pressure beauty stash.
