How to Get 90s Skater Look with these Retro Cool Brands

My Quest for That Authentic 90s Skate Vibe

Found an old skate mag while cleaning my garage last Tuesday and got obsessed with recreating those grungy 90s fits. Straight up decided I needed that look in my life ASAP.

First thing I did was raid my own closet like a madman. Dug out some ancient band tees with holes bigger than my enthusiasm. Held up my old checkerboard Vans – soles flapping like dead fish. Real talk: my own stuff was either destroyed or way too small. Felt like such a dinosaur.

Hit up local thrift shops Thursday morning hunting for treasures. Must’ve sniffed through fifty flannel shirts till I found the perfect red-and-black buffalo plaid one. Stunk like mothballs but cost less than a coffee. Grabbed baggy Levi’s 501s with actual knee rips – looked like some skater actually bailed in these.

Ordered fresh kicks online that night since my Vans were toast. Almost choked seeing modern skate shoe prices! Settled on chunky DCs with fat tongues after wasting two hours comparing brands. Pro tip: never browse online stores while hungry – almost added platform Osiris by accident.

Saturday was accessory day. Hunted down:

Final piece was the jacket drama. Wanted that classic loose fit but kept finding cropped nonsense. Almost gave up till I spotted a puffy black Vision jacket in some sketchy basement skate shop. Zipper sticks like hell but looks straight out of 1995.

Put everything on Sunday morning and damn near cried laughing. The pants sagged so much I kept tripping on frayed hems. When I tried actual skateboarding in this getup? Wiped out in 3 seconds flat – those giant shoes caught on the board. Got grass stains perfecting the “I meant to fall” look. Mission accomplished.

End result? Look like I robbed a 90s time capsule. Comfort level zero but style points maxed out. Just gotta remember not to walk near sprinklers – this flannel shrinks faster than my dignity!
