G Shock Full Metal: Simple guide to choosing yours.

Alright, let’s talk about this G-Shock Full Metal thing. It wasn’t exactly love at first sight, you know? I’d been wearing G-Shocks for ages, the regular resin ones. Tough as nails, cheap enough that you didn’t cry if you banged them up too bad. Did the job.

Then Casio started rolling out these metal versions. Saw one online, I think. Looked kinda cool, definitely different from the usual plastic fantastic vibe. But man, the price tag. That gave me pause. Seriously, for a G-Shock? Felt a bit steep compared to what I was used to.

Getting Hooked

But the idea stuck in my head. Kept seeing pictures, maybe a video review here and there. That shiny metal case, the bracelet… it just looked more, I don’t know, substantial? Grown-up, maybe? Kept telling myself my old resin one was perfectly fine, but that metal gleam was tempting.

I spent a good few weeks just mulling it over. Do I really need it? Is it worth the extra cash just for the metal? I read some forum posts, saw what other folks were saying. Some loved it, others thought it defeated the purpose of a ‘beater’ G-Shock. Fair point, actually.

Taking the Plunge

Eventually, I just caved. Found a decent deal online – not amazing, but enough to push me over the edge. Hit the ‘buy’ button before I could talk myself out of it again. Felt a bit guilty, honestly, spending that much on what’s essentially the same watch module I already had, just in a fancy metal suit.

The waiting part was killer. Kept checking the tracking like a hawk. When the box finally arrived, I ripped it open pretty quick. And yeah, first impression? Heavy. Way heavier than the resin ones. Felt solid, though. Really solid. The finish was nice, that brushed and polished look. Definitely felt more premium.

Living With It

So, I started wearing it. Sized the bracelet myself, which was a bit fiddly but got it done. Took some getting used to the weight on the wrist. First few days, I was constantly aware of it. Not uncomfortable, just… present.

Used it just like my old G-Shocks:

  • Wore it doing yard work.
  • Took it swimming.
  • Banged it against a door frame (oops).

And you know what? It held up. Got a few tiny scratches on the bracelet clasp, mostly from desk diving, but the case and crystal stayed clean. That’s the G-Shock DNA right there, just wrapped in metal. It felt good knowing it could take a knock but still looked decent enough to wear out without feeling like I was rocking a kid’s watch.

The functions are standard G-Shock stuff. Stopwatch, timer, alarms, world time. Use the timer occasionally, maybe the stopwatch now and then. Mostly, it just tells the time. And the date. Does that perfectly well. The backlight is good too, nice and bright.

Overall thoughts? Yeah, I dig it. It’s kinda the best of both worlds. Tough as old boots, but looks a bit smarter than the resin models. The weight grew on me; now the resin ones feel too light, almost flimsy. Is it overpriced? Maybe a little. But do I regret buying it? Nah. It’s become my go-to daily watch. Feels like a proper tool watch, just a bit shinier.
