Okay, so I’ve been diving deep into “Big Little Lies” lately, and wow, the characters are just something else. I wanted to really understand them, so I started this whole process of breaking them down. Here’s how it went:

First, I watched the show again. I mean, really watched it. Not just for the plot, but to focus on each character. I took notes on their actions, reactions, how they talk, what they wear – everything.
Then, I created these little profiles for each of them. Madeline, Celeste, Jane, Renata, Bonnie – the whole crew. I listed out their main traits, you know, like:
- Madeline: Energetic, opinionated, a bit controlling, fiercely loyal.
- Celeste: Calm on the surface, but hiding so much pain, incredibly strong.
- Jane: Guarded, traumatized, but determined to protect her son.
- Renata: Successful , ambitious, and a bit of a helicopter.
- Bonnie: free-spiried and kind .
Dig into relationship
After that, I started mapping out their relationships. Who’s friends with who? Who’s got beef with who? It’s like a spiderweb of connections. I used different colored pens to show the different types of relationships – green for friendships, red for conflicts, that kind of thing.
Pay attention to the details
I also paid attention to the little details. Like, how does Madeline’s fast-paced speech show her anxiety? Or how does Celeste’s perfect exterior crack when she’s alone? It’s all in those tiny moments.

Read and search something
I read some articles and interviews about the characters, too. It’s interesting to see what other people think, and sometimes it gives you a new perspective.
Think it in my way
Finally, I spent some time just thinking about each character. Like, what motivates them? What are their biggest fears? What would they do in different situations? It’s kind of like getting into their heads.
This whole thing was actually super helpful. I feel like I understand the characters so much better now, and it makes watching the show even more interesting. If you’re a fan, I totally recommend giving it a try!
