Okay, so “Dirty New York”… Let me tell you about this little experiment I tried. It all started with me thinking about how much trash New York City produces. I mean, you see it everywhere, right?

Dirty New York: Why Some People Say Its Getting Worse(and How to help fix it)

So, I started by just walking around my neighborhood. I live in Brooklyn, and I figured that was as good a place as any to begin. I grabbed my phone and started snapping pictures. Not pretty pictures, mind you. Pictures of overflowing trash cans, garbage bags piled on the sidewalks, you know, the real deal.

  • First day: Walked around my block. Took about 20 photos.
  • Second day: Expanded my area. Covered a few more blocks. Another 30 photos or so.
  • Third day: Ventured into a different neighborhood. Got some shots of those big dumpsters behind restaurants. Man, those things are gnarly.

After a few days of this, I had a pretty decent collection of photos. Then came the fun part – messing around with them.

I uploaded photos to my old *’s a total clunker, but it gets the job done.I start use some photo editing app.

I’m no expert, by the way. I’m just fooling around, adjusting the contrast, the saturation, you know, making the grime really pop. I am playing with some filters to make it black and white, looks cool.

I wanted the photos to look… well, dirty. Gritty. Like you could almost smell the garbage through the *’s the feeling i want.

I spent a couple of evenings tweaking and adjusting. It was kind of addictive, actually. I’d lose track of time, just trying to get the right look. And I’d realize “Oh crap, it’s 2 AM!”

The Result?

Finally, I picked out about a dozen of my favorite shots. And you know what? They looked pretty damn cool.I made them into this gritty, black-and-white * Showed it to some of my friends. They thought it, it’s kind of gross but also kind of captivating.

So yeah, that’s the story of my “Dirty New York” project. It was just a little experiment, a way to document the city in a different way. It’s not exactly glamorous, but it’s real. And honestly, it was a lot of fun.
