Different Types of Hands of the Watch Which Style is Best

Okay so I was checking out watches the other day and realized I couldn’t tell apart the hand styles. Like why does one watch feel fancy and another looks cheap? Decided to do a deep dive myself. Grabbed five watches from my collection – some cheap beaters, a couple mid-range ones, and my grandpa’s old dress watch.

Round One: Testing Readability

First thing I did was wear each around for a full day. Made notes every time I checked the time:

  • That Mercedes hand style (you know, that circle thing near the base) – SUPER clear in daylight but disappeared in dim bars. Felt sporty but cheap under office lights.
  • Simple stick hands – Dead boring but damn functional. My $20 Casio beat my Seiko here. Got the job done but zero personality.
  • Breguet hands (the fancy ones with moon tips) – Looked gorgeous on grandpa’s watch during meetings. But hiking? Total disaster. Mud covered the details completely.

Messy Experiment Time

Tried modifying a cheap watch with paint pens. Took dauphine hands (those angled ones) and painted neon stripes. Looked ridiculous but proved something – thickness matters more than shape for visibility. Also learned acrylic paint flakes off when sweaty. Oops.

The Big Surprise

Expected skeleton hands (see-through ones) to suck for reading time. Turns out they worked fine as long as the color contrasted with the dial. But here’s the kicker – my eyes kept getting distracted by the moving gears underneath. Ended up staring at the mechanics like an idiot instead of checking the time!

Final Takedown

After a week of testing:

  • Dress watches – Go with dauphine or baton. Thin and classy wins.
  • Beater watches – Mercedes or broad arrows. That extra surface area helps when you’re moving fast.
  • Fancy showpieces – Skeletons all day. Who cares if they’re practical? They’re conversation starters.

Ended up putting grandpa’s dress watch back in the box with new respect. Those fussy Breguet hands suddenly made sense – they’re not meant for mud or hiking, just like tuxedos aren’t for mowing lawns. Still think my painted Casio looks dope though. Might wear it to a wedding just to annoy people.
