Black and brown ones, what can I say? My old eyes have seen a lot, I tell you. These days, they say there are no rules, wear what you like. But back in my day, things were different. Black and brown, they were like two different things. Now, they say it’s okay to put ’em together. Hmm, fashion, they call it.
Black Shoes for Fancy Times
Black shoes, they’re for those fancy times. Black shoes are always good. You know, like when you gotta dress up. My old man, he always wore black shoes when he went to town for special things. They shine ’em up real good, lookin’ all spiffy. You can wear black shoes with anything, ‘cept maybe brown pants, ha! That’d look a little funny, I reckon.
Black is the most formal color, they always said. Like for those tuxedo things, whatever those are. And for work, for business. Black shoes, they mean business. I remember my grandson, he got all dressed up for a job interview. Black shoes, shiny as a new coin. He got the job, too! Maybe it was the shoes, who knows?
Brown Shoes for Other Times
Brown shoes, well, they’re good too. But they ain’t as fancy as black ones. You wear brown shoes with different things, not black pants. Brown shoes go with blue, like them jeans everyone wears these days. And they go with that burgundy color, like that old dress I used to have. Brown’s more for everyday, I guess.

Black Jeans, What Shoes?
Now, black jeans, that’s a tricky one. My granddaughter, she wears them all the time. They say you can wear black or dark brown shoes with black jeans. Black with black, that makes sense, I suppose. And dark brown, well, it’s close enough to black, ain’t it? It’s like they’re cousins or somethin’. So that’s alright, I guess.
Black jeans are everywhere! They are good with black shoes and dark brown shoes, black and brown ones. All good.
Chinos, What are Those?
And then there are these “chinos” things. I don’t rightly know what those are, but they say they come in all sorts of colors. Like khaki, that’s like a light brown, kinda like the color of dirt after it rains. And beige, that’s even lighter, like the color of that old flour sack I used to have.
They say you gotta match your shoes to these chinos. So if you got khaki chinos, you wear, I don’t know, maybe brown shoes? And beige chinos, maybe light brown shoes? It’s all about matchin’, they say. Like when you plant your garden, you gotta put the right seeds in the right place. Same thing, I reckon. If you have khaki or beige chinos, match shoes color. Make sense, I think.
Mixing Black and Brown, What About That?
They say you can mix black and brown these days. I don’t know about that. It’s like mixin’ your peas and carrots, I suppose. Some folks like it, some folks don’t. My old man, he wouldn’t have mixed ’em. But times change, I guess. These days people want to mix black and brown ones.
If you mix it good, it can look good, they said. I don’t know, maybe, but black is black, brown is brown.

They say it can look “classy” and “timeless.” I don’t know what those words mean, but I guess it means it looks good. Like when you put on a nice apron over your old dress. It ain’t new, but it still looks alright. So maybe mixin’ black and brown is like that. It ain’t what we used to do, but maybe it’s alright.
No Rules, They Say
They say there are no rules anymore. Wear what you like, they say. Be yourself, they say. Well, that’s good, I suppose. Everyone should be themselves. But sometimes, I think a few rules ain’t so bad. Like keepin’ your elbows off the table and sayin’ “please” and “thank you.” Those are good rules. Maybe there should be a few rules about shoes, too. But what do I know? I’m just an old lady. These young folks, they know everything these days. Black and brown ones, mix or not mix, it’s all good to them.
I just hope they keep their shoes clean. That’s one rule I always followed. Clean shoes, clean heart, that’s what my mama used to say. And I reckon she was right about that.
