Wanted that Chantecaille Elephant eyeshadow palette forever – you know, the one that supports elephant conservation? But dang, that price tag! $150 for sparkly dirt ain’t easy to swallow. Grabbed my laptop last Thursday night for some serious hunting.
Phase 1: The Obvious Spots
First hit up Chantecaille’s own store. Out of stock. Big shocker. Clicked over to Nordstrom’s site next – showed “available” until I added to cart. Boom! Error message saying gone. Same story at Bloomingdale’s and Neiman Marcus. Felt like chasing ghosts.
Almost caved when eBay popped up with listings. Saw one for $300 and choked on my coffee. Pro tip: Never trust resellers with stock photos and zero feedback scores.
Phase 2: Deep Diving
Changed tactics Friday morning:
- Called 3 local Sephoras – all laughed politely
- Checked international stores (Canada/U.K.) – crazy shipping + customs
- Posted in makeup forums begging for leads
Nearly gave up until Linda from Kansas DMed me: “Try small boutiques near colleges”. Apparently rich students return gifts sometimes. Genius!
The Score
Called every boutique near UCLA. On try #8, this posh little skincare place whispered: “We have one return… box damaged but product untouched”. Raced over and got it for $112 after their loyalty discount! Snapped pic of my happy haul immediately – no elephant left behind.
Moral? Never trust the big guys. That limited edition unicorn? Probably hiding in some mom-and-pop shop’s return bin. Just bring coffee and beg nicely.
