Alright, let’s talk about what I worked on today. I needed to get a silhouette from an unfolded ring design, specifically for cutting it out later.

Getting Started
First thing, I grabbed the 3D model of the ring I had already designed. It was just sitting there on my computer. Opened it up in my usual design software, nothing fancy, just the one I use most days.
Unfolding the Ring
Okay, so the ring is obviously round, 3D. But for cutting on a flat machine, I needed it laid out flat. Like unrolling a toilet paper tube, kinda. Most design tools have something for this, sometimes called ‘unroll’ or ‘unwrap surface’.
So, I selected the main surface of the ring I wanted the pattern from. Ran the unroll command. It spat out a flat shape. Honestly, sometimes this step is a bit wonky. You gotta check if it stretched things weirdly. Maybe adjust some settings. Took me a couple of tries to get a flattened version that looked reasonably accurate to the surface dimensions.
Making the Silhouette
Now I had this flat 2D shape derived from the 3D ring. But it still had maybe extra lines or details from the unrolling process. I didn’t need any of that. For the cutter, I just needed the pure outline, the silhouette.
- I selected the entire flattened shape.
- Then, I looked for an outlining tool. Sometimes it’s called ‘offset’ with a zero distance, or ‘create boundary’, or just ‘silhouette’. Found the right button for my software.
- Clicked it, and boom, it generated a line just around the outer edge of the flattened shape.
Cleaning Up the Mess
This part’s important. Often, the automatically generated outline isn’t perfect. I zoomed way in.

- Looked for any tiny gaps in the line. The cutting machine hates gaps.
- Checked for overlapping lines or points sitting right on top of each other. Had to delete the extras.
- Smoothed out any jagged parts that came from the unrolling process. Just nudging points around a bit.
The goal here is to get one single, continuous, closed line that defines the exact shape to be cut. No breaks, no extra bits.
Final Steps
Once I was happy with the clean outline, I double-checked it was really just one connected path. Selected it to make sure.
Then, I just saved that specific outline. Usually save it as a DXF or SVG file, formats that most laser cutters or CNC machines can read easily. Deleted all the other leftover geometry from the screen, just kept the final silhouette.
And that was basically it. Got my flat pattern silhouette ready for the cutting stage. Took a bit of fiddling, especially the cleanup, but it’s done now.
