  • Visual storytelling: There was often a massive emphasis on visuals, on the way bodies were filmed, the use of light and shadow. Sometimes it felt more like watching a moving painting than a traditional narrative. They weren’t afraid to let the images do the talking.
  • Exploring taboos: Obviously, many of them dealt with themes that are considered taboo or are just not openly discussed in mainstream cinema. This was the challenging part, and also the part that sometimes made me think the most. It wasn’t always easy to watch.

I found myself asking questions like, “What does this say about the culture it came from?” or “Is this genuinely exploring something about human nature, or is it just trying to provoke for shock value?” There wasn’t always an easy answer, and often it was probably a bit of both. Some films felt like they were genuinely trying to explore the complexities of desire, relationships, and the human condition. Others, not so much, felt more exploitative.

It wasn’t about becoming an expert or anything grand like that. It was just a personal journey of discovery, trying to understand a different facet of cinema. And like any exploration, you learn a bit more about the world, and maybe a little bit about yourself too, what your own boundaries are, and what makes you think.
