So, I got pretty fed up with my running gear lately. You know how it is, the pockets are either non-existent or just totally useless. My phone would bounce like crazy, or my keys would jab me in the leg. Drove me nuts. I saw some of that fancy new sportswear online, the stuff with all the special compartments and ‘tech’ fabrics. Looked cool, sure, but the prices? Forget about it.

That got me thinking. Maybe I could sort this out myself? Felt a bit silly, but I figured, why not try? It’s just shorts, right?

Getting Started – The Plan

I dug through my drawer and found an old pair of running shorts. Still decent, just annoying pockets. Then I remembered I had some stretchy fabric leftover from fixing my kid’s backpack. Good enough.

My plan was simple: add a better pocket. I measured my phone and my house key. I wasn’t aiming for designer looks, just something that would hold my stuff tight against my body, maybe around the waistband at the back. Seemed like the least bouncy spot.

The Making Of…

Okay, confession time: my sewing skills are basic. Like, really basic. I grabbed a needle and thread – didn’t even bother with the sewing machine, too much hassle. Sketched the pocket shape onto the fabric scrap. Cut it out. Pinned it onto the inside waistband of the shorts.

Then I just started sewing. Took me a good hour, maybe more. My stitches weren’t exactly neat, kinda uneven. Looked very… homemade. But the pocket seemed attached okay. It was basically a stretchy little pouch sewn flat against the inside waistband.

Key steps I took:

  • Found old shorts and scrap fabric.
  • Measured phone/keys for pocket size.
  • Decided on waistband placement.
  • Cut fabric for the pocket.
  • Hand-sewed the pocket onto the shorts’ waistband.

Testing the Contraption

Next day, time for the real test. I nervously slid my phone into the new pocket. It felt snug. Put the shorts on. Okay, felt a bit different having the phone right there on my lower back, but not bad. Headed out for my usual 5k run.

And you know what? It actually worked! The phone stayed put. No bouncing. No jabbing. I could almost forget it was there. The keys went in too, didn’t feel them at all. The stitching held up, which honestly surprised me a little.

Final Thoughts

Look, it ain’t pretty. If you looked close, you’d see my terrible sewing. But who cares? It solved my problem perfectly. Didn’t cost me a penny, just a bit of time and some thread.

Sometimes this ‘new mode’ stuff doesn’t need to be about buying the latest expensive gear. It can just be about figuring out what works for you and making it happen. Felt pretty good to have fixed it myself, even if it looks rough. This little DIY pocket is definitely my personal ‘new mode’ sportswear for now.
