Felt like every other person had a different take, and trying to sort out the real deal from the pure hype was a real headache.

I visited a few local jewelry shops, not to buy anything fancy, just to ask a bunch of what probably sounded like dumb questions, pretending I was a serious buyer. That was almost a big mistake. The first batch I nearly clicked ‘buy’ on? Let’s just say calling them “diamond-like” would have been generous.

My grand business plan, if you can even call it that, was pretty simple: buy low, sell a bit higher. Easy peasy, right? So I started looking into wholesale suppliers. Man, that was a completely different ball game. Minimum order quantities, needing a proper business license for some, while others just gave off super sketchy vibes. I remember this one fella I chatted with online; his “office,” from the one blurry picture he sent, looked suspiciously like a garden shed. Red flags were waving all over the place!

Then came the equipment. Loupes, testers… I went and bought a cheap diamond tester from some random website. For about five glorious minutes, I felt like a real pro, until I figured out it would pretty much scream “diamond” at a piece of glass if I didn’t hold it just right. What a complete waste of twenty bucks that was. It became crystal clear, real fast, that without some serious cash and actual connections, breaking into this scene was going to be incredibly tough. This isn’t like slinging t-shirts online; the diamond world is a tight-knit circle, and they don’t just let anyone in.

I actually have a bit of a funny story, well, maybe not so funny at the time. I tried to get a piece of old family jewelry appraised, thinking, “Hey, maybe there’s a hidden gem here!” Took it to this appraiser, paid him for his time. He spent all of two minutes looking at it, then casually told me it was basically costume jewelry. My dreams of uncovering a forgotten family treasure? Poof. Vanished. My aunt, who’d given it to my mom, had sworn blind it was real. Let’s just say family dinners were a tad awkward for a while after I dropped that bombshell. That experience kinda poured cold water on my enthusiasm, I gotta admit.

Maybe one day I’ll buy a nice piece, from a proper, reputable dealer, now that I know just enough to ask some slightly more intelligent questions!

That whole diamond phase, it happened during a really weird period in my life. I’d just quit a super stressful job, one of those gigs where you’re constantly on call, day and night. I thought maybe this diamond thing could be a chill side hustle, something to ease into. Turns out, it brought its own brand of stress! After the whole family jewelry fiasco, I decided it was time to pivot, to try something completely different. Ended up taking a course in pottery, believe it or not. Now, I make and sell handmade mugs online. It’s not nearly as glamorous as diamonds, but it’s way less complicated, and the people I sell to are genuinely lovely. Funny how things pan out, isn’t it? Sometimes you’ve got to try something totally out there to figure out what you actually enjoy, or, more importantly, what’s actually doable for you.
