Okay, so I’ve been wanting to switch up my hair for a while, and I finally decided to go for it! I’ve always loved the look of light brown hair with caramel highlights, so I thought, “Why not?”

First, I gathered my supplies. I’m no professional, so I went with a box dye kit for the base color – a nice, light brown shade. Then, I picked up a separate highlighting kit, specifically one that promised caramel tones. I also made sure I had some old towels, gloves, a mixing bowl, and an applicator brush. You know, the usual DIY hair dye essentials.
The Base Color
I started by applying the base color. I followed the instructions on the box religiously. I sectioned my hair, applied the dye evenly from root to tip, and then waited. The waiting game is always the hardest part! I think I paced around my apartment for a good 30 minutes while the color developed.
Finally,I rinsed out and applied conditoner. So far, so good – my hair was a uniform light brown. It was a little darker than I expected, but I knew the highlights would brighten things up.
Adding the Caramel Magic
Next up, the highlights! This part was a little trickier. I used the little tool that came with the highlighting kit. Honestly, I just kind of went for it, picking out random strands and painting on the highlighting mixture. I tried to focus more on the pieces that frame my face and the ends of my hair, since that’s where the sun would naturally hit.
- I painted the highlights on.
- I waited. (More pacing!)
- Rinsed again.
The Result
After all,I blow-dried my hair and… I loved it! It wasn’t perfect, of course. Some of the highlights were a little chunkier than I intended, but overall, it looked pretty darn good! The caramel highlights really warmed up the light brown base, and it gave my hair so much more dimension.

It’s definitely a change, but I’m so happy I did it. It feels like a fresh start, and who doesn’t love that new-hair feeling? Plus, I saved a ton of money by doing it myself. Win-win!
