Okay, so I got this crazy idea to try and build a model of the 1962 Volkswagen bus. I’ve always loved those things – they just have so much character, you know? Plus, I figured it’d be a fun challenge. So, I decided to give it a shot.

First things first, I needed to gather up some reference images. I spent a good chunk of time just scrolling through pictures online, trying to find good shots of the bus from all angles. I saved a bunch of them to my computer, and even printed some out so I could really study the details. You wouldn’t believe how many different variations of this thing there are!
Next, I had to decide what materials I was going to use. I thought about using wood, but that seemed a little too ambitious for my first try. I ended up settling on using some sturdy cardboard I had lying around. It seemed like a good, forgiving material to work with.
With my materials sorted, I started sketching out the basic shape of the bus on the cardboard. This part was tricky. Getting the proportions right was super important, so I took my time and made a lot of adjustments along the way. I used a ruler and a pencil to get those lines as straight as possible.
- Cut out the base.
- Folded and glued the sides.
- Crafted the curved roof – that was tough!
- Cut out tiny windows – painstaking, but worth it.
- Made little cardboard wheels and stuck them on.
After cutting out all the individual pieces, it was time to start assembling. This was probably the most satisfying part of the whole process. Seeing the bus slowly take shape was so cool. I used regular glue to stick everything together, and I had to use a bunch of clamps and weights to hold things in place while the glue dried.
Once the basic structure was done, I started working on the details. I added the iconic VW logo to the front, cut out the little windows, and even made some tiny side mirrors out of scraps. It was all about those little touches to really bring it to life.

Finally, I decided to paint it. I went with a classic two-tone color scheme – light blue on top and white on the bottom. I used some acrylic paints I picked up from the craft store. Applying the paint evenly was a bit of a challenge, but I think it turned out pretty decent. I mean i love it!
And there you have it! My very own handmade 1962 Volkswagen bus model. It’s definitely not perfect, but I’m pretty proud of how it turned out. It was a fun and rewarding project, and I learned a lot along the way. Maybe I’ll try a more complex model next time – who knows?
What do you guys think?
