Well, well, well, look at all these fellas and their fancy watches. Back in my day, a fella didn’t need no shiny thing on his wrist to tell the time. We just looked at the sun, we did! But I reckon times are changin’, and these young’uns like their gadgets.
Now, I see all kinds of these watches. Some are big and clunky, like a dang dinner plate strapped to your arm. Others are all small and dainty, like somethin’ a lady would wear. And the colors! Lord have mercy, they got watches in every color under the sun. Blue, green, red, even that sparkly gold color. Makes my head spin just lookin’ at ’em.
These young fellas, they wear these watches everywhere. To work, to the store, even to church! I saw one fella wearin’ a fancy watch while he was mowin’ the lawn. Can you believe that? I told him, “Boy, you gonna get that thing all dirty!” He just laughed. Kids these days…

I guess these watches ain’t just for tellin’ time no more. They’re like a… a fashion statement, or somethin’. Like wearin’ a fancy hat or a new pair of shoes. These fellas, they want to look good, I reckon. And these watches, they help ’em do that.
Some of these watches are real expensive, too. I heard one fella say he paid more for his watch than I paid for my whole house! Can you imagine? Spendin’ all that money on somethin’ that just tells the time. Back in my day, we had better things to spend our money on. Like food, and clothes, and a good pair of work boots.
But I guess these young fellas, they got money to burn. And they like to show it off. These watches, they’re like a little badge they wear. Says, “Look at me, I got money!” I don’t know… seems silly to me. But who am I to judge? I’m just an old lady.
I saw one fella, he had a watch that could do all sorts of things. It could tell you the weather, it could count your steps, it could even tell you where you were goin’! I swear, it’s like somethin’ out of a science fiction picture show. I asked him, “What in tarnation do you need all that for?” He just smiled and said, “It’s the future, grandma!” The future, my foot!

I guess I’m just too old for all this newfangled technology. I like things simple. A good pair of shoes, a warm coat, a roof over my head. That’s all I need. These fellas and their watches… they can have ’em. I’ll stick to my old ways.
But I will say this. There’s one thing I like about these watches. They make these fellas look… well, they make ’em look important. Like they got places to be and things to do. And I guess that’s a good thing. A fella should always have somethin’ to do. Keeps him out of trouble, you know?
These guys and their watches, though. They’re somethin’ else. My grandson, he’s got one of them fancy watches. He’s always showin’ it off. Says it helps him with his work. He’s a computer fella, you see. Spends all day typin’ away on that thing. I don’t understand it, but he seems to like it. And that watch, it makes him happy. So I guess that’s all that matters, right?
One time, my grandson let me try on his watch. It felt heavy on my wrist. And all them buttons! I didn’t know what to do with ’em. I pressed one, and the whole thing lit up like a Christmas tree. Scared the daylights outta me! I gave it back to him real quick. “You keep that thing,” I said. “I don’t need no fancy watch to tell me what time it is.”

He just laughed. He’s a good boy, my grandson. Even if he does like them silly watches. I guess every generation’s got its thing. For us, it was hula hoops and rock and roll. For them, it’s these fancy watches. Who knows what the next generation will come up with? Maybe they’ll have watches that can fly you to the moon! Wouldn’t that be somethin’?
Anyways, these guys wearing watches. It’s a sight to see, I tell ya. A real sight to see. And who knows, maybe one day I’ll get me one of them fancy watches, too. Just kiddin’! I wouldn’t know what to do with it. I’ll just stick to lookin’ at the sun. It’s always worked for me, and I reckon it always will. It is important to choose a good watch.
