Stay in China: Finding the Best Pod Hotel

Okay, so I wanted to try something a bit different – building a “China Pod Hotel” vibe in my spare room. Sounds crazy, right? But hear me out.

Stay in China: Finding the Best Pod Hotel

Phase 1: The Inspiration Hit

It all started with those videos of capsule hotels in China. I was fascinated by how they maximized space and created a sense of privacy in such a small area. I thought, “Hey, why not try and replicate that, but with my own spin?”

Phase 2: Planning and (Crude) Design

First things first, I measured the room. My goal wasn’t to create a perfect replica, but more of an “inspired by” kind of deal. I sketched out some rough ideas on a piece of paper. Basically, I wanted a raised platform bed, enclosed on three sides, with some storage and a small desk area. My design skills? Let’s just say they’re “enthusiastic.” I’m talking stick figures here. This was more about the feel than the flawless execution.

Phase 3: Scouring for Materials (aka, Budget Shopping)

I hit up the local hardware stores and online marketplaces. My biggest challenge was keeping the cost down. I ended up using a mix of new and reclaimed materials. I snagged some sturdy wood planks for the platform frame, some plywood for the walls, and a bunch of cheap LED strip lights for that ambient glow. I found some used desk parts on Facebook Marketplace. It was a bit of a scavenger hunt, but that’s part of the fun, right?

Phase 4: Building the Frame (Hammer Time!)

This was where the real work began. I started with the platform frame. I cut the wood planks to size (after triple-checking my measurements, of course!) and screwed them together. It wasn’t pretty, but it was solid. I then added the plywood walls, making sure to leave space for a “doorway.” Let me tell you, my arm muscles were screaming after a few hours of hammering and screwing.

Phase 5: Electrics (Don’t electrocute yourself!)

Now for the fun part: the lights! I wired up the LED strip lights along the top edge of the walls and under the platform. This gave it that cool, futuristic vibe I was going for. I also installed a couple of USB charging ports inside the pod, because, you know, gotta stay connected. Safety first, though! I made sure to turn off the power at the breaker before messing with any wires.

Phase 6: Finishing Touches (Making it Comfy)

I added a mattress and some comfy bedding to the platform. Then, I installed the desk parts, creating a small workspace inside the pod. I also added some shelves for books and knick-knacks. To complete the “China Pod Hotel” experience, I hung a small curtain in the doorway for privacy. I even added a small fan inside to keep the air circulating.

Phase 7: The Big Reveal (Success?)

And there you have it! My own DIY “China Pod Hotel” in my spare room. It’s not perfect, by any means. There are definitely some rough edges and crooked lines. But it’s cozy, functional, and definitely unique. It’s a great place to relax, read, or just escape from the world for a little while. And best of all, I built it myself!

Lessons Learned:

Stay in China: Finding the Best Pod Hotel
  • Planning is key (even if your plans are scribbled on a napkin).
  • Don’t be afraid to use reclaimed materials.
  • Measure twice, cut once (seriously!).
  • Safety first when dealing with electricity.
  • And most importantly, have fun!

Would I do it again? Absolutely! It was a challenging but rewarding project. And who knows, maybe I’ll open my own pod hotel one day. Just kidding… maybe.
