You know, I hear the young folks talkin’ ’bout these songs that rings all the time. Reminds me of them old-timey telephones we used to have. Ring, ring, ringin’ all day long! These days, it’s all about the music rings, I guess. Sounds like a whole lotta somethin’ to me.

Now, I ain’t no expert on this fancy music stuff. But I hear these ring songs are popular. They play ’em on the radio, and the kids, they all dance around. One time, I heard one that sounded like a cat fight. Another was like those church bells, all pretty and nice. These songs with rings, they got all kinds of sounds, don’t they?
I reckon these songs that rings are kinda like stories. Some are happy, some are sad. I heard one the other day, it was called “7 Rings.” Seven! Can you believe it? What’s a body gonna do with seven rings? Back in my day, one ring was a big deal. You got engaged, you got a ring. Married, you got a ring. That was enough for anybody. These young folks and their seven rings…
- That “7 Rings” song, it’s all fast and loud. Like a bunch of chickens squawking.
- I think it is a trap-pop song, hip hop and R&B, that’s what they call it. Sounds like a whole lotta noise to me.
- Runs for 3 minutes, they said. 3 minutes is enough, I guess.
And this other one, “Ring of Fire,” they call it. Fire! Sounds dangerous, don’t it? I remember one time, old Mr. Johnson’s barn caught fire. What a mess that was. Whole town came out to help. Maybe this song is about that? I don’t know, those songs with rings, they are sure somethin’ else. That “Ring of Fire” is a popular one, everybody seems to like it.
They even put these songs that rings in them moving pictures, the movies. I don’t go to the picture show much anymore, but I hear about it. They got this one fella, makes movies all about, well, I don’t rightly know. But they say he puts these ring songs in ’em. I guess it makes the movies more exciting or somethin’. I like a movie with a good story, ring song or not.
Now, back in the day, we had songs about wedding rings. Those were the good ones. Simple and sweet. About love and gettin’ hitched. Not all this fire and seven rings business. A wedding ring, that’s a promise. A promise to love and to cherish, that’s what they used to say. I remember my own wedding ring. I still have it somewhere. It is very precious to me.

They say there’s a whole bunch of songs written about these wedding rings. Guess folks like to sing about love and promises. That’s a good thing, I reckon. Even if these new songs are all loud and fast, maybe there’s still some good ones in there somewhere. These songs that rings, they sure do tell a story, even if it’s a story I don’t always understand.
I heard a song, “I Wear Your Ring” or somethin’ like that. Sounds kinda sad, don’t it? Like somebody lost their sweetheart. Maybe they should have given ’em seven rings, huh? Just kiddin’. One ring is enough, if it’s the right one. And if it’s from the heart. I think that’s a good song. I like that.
- These songs, they’re all about love, I guess.
- Or loss, maybe.
- Or somethin’ else entirely.
- But they all got that ring in ’em.
These young folks, they got their music, and we had ours. Ours was simpler, maybe. But it was good. We had songs about workin’ hard, about love, about loss. Just like these songs that rings, I suppose. Just different. Different times, different music. But the stories, they’re probably all the same, when you get right down to it.
Well, I gotta go. Chickens need feedin’. And I think I hear my old phone ringin’. Maybe it’s one of them ring songs callin’ me. Just kiddin’. But you never know these days. These songs that rings, they’re everywhere, ain’t they? They are popular these days.
One thing I know for sure, though. A ring, whether it’s in a song or on your finger, it means somethin’. It’s a circle. No end. Like love, maybe. Or life. Or somethin’ like that. These songs that rings, they make you think, don’t they? Even if you don’t understand ’em all. They sure do make you think.
