So, I got this thought stuck in my head the other day, you know? Carolina Herrera. Where’s she actually from? You hear that name, sounds super elegant, maybe Spanish, or Italian? I always sort of pictured her in Paris, some fancy studio.

Anyway, I was just killing time. My computer was doing one of those updates that takes forever, the kind where the progress bar moves like it’s stuck in molasses. Nothing much else to do, so I figured, why not? Pulled out my phone.
My process was pretty straightforward, nothing fancy. I just opened up a browser and typed it in: “where is carolina herrera from”. Pretty basic stuff. You get a ton of results, naturally. Pictures of dresses, perfume ads, the whole nine yards. Had to do a bit of scrolling, wade through the flashy bits.
And then I saw it, clear as anything. Venezuela. Born in Caracas.
My Little Realization Moment
Venezuela! I gotta say, that wasn’t what I was expecting. My mind had her placed somewhere in Europe, no doubt. It really makes you think, doesn’t it? How we get these ideas fixed in our heads about where people, especially in things like high fashion, are ‘supposed’ to come from.
You automatically think Paris, Milan, maybe New York. But Caracas? It was a bit of a surprise. Then you read a tiny bit more, you find out she came from a pretty established family there, then moved to the US to kick off her brand. It starts to make more sense then. It’s not just about the place, but the person and the drive, I guess.

It reminded me of this amazing little bakery I stumbled upon once, in a town you wouldn’t think twice about. Made the best bread I’ve ever tasted. The owner learned everything from her grandma, no fancy culinary school. Just pure skill and passion. Carolina Herrera, building this huge fashion house, coming from Venezuela… it’s kinda like that. Talent can bloom anywhere, doesn’t need a specific zip code.
So, that was my little journey of discovery. Just a simple question, but it ended up being a nice little reminder not to box things in too much. And yeah, she’s from Venezuela. Now I know!
