Okay, so I’ve been wanting to make a tote bag for a while, you know, one of those big, roomy ones that can carry everything. I finally decided to tackle the “Louie Tote Bag” – I liked the name, sounded fancy!

First, I gathered all my materials. I chose a sturdy canvas fabric because I wanted it to be tough. I mean, who wants a tote bag that rips after two uses? I also picked out some nice, thick straps for the handles. Found some cute patterned lining fabric, too. And, of course, I needed my trusty sewing machine, scissors, pins, thread – the whole shebang.
Cutting and Preparing
Next up, cutting the fabric. This part always makes me a little nervous, one wrong snip and you’re screwed! I carefully followed the pattern pieces (thank goodness for those!), and cut out the main body pieces, the lining, and the pieces for the straps. I am not a professional, so I really took my time!
- Cut two main body pieces from the canvas.
- Cut two lining pieces from the patterned fabric.
- Cut the strap pieces (usually long rectangles).
Sewing the Main Body
With all the pieces cut, it was time to start sewing! I pinned the two canvas body pieces together, right sides facing each other, and stitched along the sides and bottom, leaving the top open. Did the same thing with the lining pieces. Easy peasy, so far,so good!
Creating the Straps
Then I created the straps. I folded each strap piece in half lengthwise, right sides together, and sewed along the long edge. Then, I turned them right side out. This part can be a bit fiddly, but a safety pin helps to pull it through. After that, I topstitched along the edges of the straps to make them look neat and give them extra strength.
Assembling Everything
Now for the fun part – putting it all together! I slipped the lining inside the canvas bag, with right sides facing each other. Then, I carefully pinned the straps in place between the canvas and lining, making sure they were evenly spaced. Finally, I stitched all the way around the top edge, leaving a small gap to turn the bag right side out.

Finishing Touches
Through that gap, I pulled the whole bag right side out. It’s like magic, seeing it take shape! After pressing the edges nice and flat, I hand-stitched that gap closed. And…done! My very own Louie Tote Bag, ready to carry all my stuff, not too bad huh?
It was a bit of a project, a few hours of work, but totally worth it. I am so happy with my new tote bag! It’s exactly the size I wanted, feels super durable, and I actually made it myself. I am feeling very proud!
