So, I recently picked up a new Omega Seamaster Diver 300M. It’s a beautiful watch, but I ran into a little hiccup when I first got it.

The date was off, and being the kind of guy who likes things just right, I immediately wanted to fix it. I figured, “How hard can it be?” Turns out, there’s a proper way to do it, and I, in my excitement, completely missed it.

I started by looking for the knob, or as watch people call it, the crown, on the side of the watch. Found it easily enough – it’s on the right side. Now, here’s where I messed up. I just started spinning the crown, trying to get the date to change. I was turning it and turning it, and the date was not moving at all. It seemed to be stuck.

My frustration started building up. I thought maybe I needed to pull it out or push it in, so I fiddled with it some more. I even tried shaking the watch a bit. Still nothing! I was convinced the date mechanism was broken.

Then, defeated, I decided to check the manual. And guess what? There’s actually a specific way to set the date on this watch. You have to pull the crown out to the second position. I felt a bit silly, but I followed the instructions, and sure enough, the date started changing smoothly.

Here are the steps I wish I knew from the start:

  • Find the crown on the right side of the watch.
  • Pull the crown out gently until you feel a click. This is the first position.
  • Pull it out one more time until you feel a second click. This is the correct position for setting the date.
  • Turn the crown to adjust the date.
  • Once the date is set, push the crown back in all the way.

Now, after figuring that out, I started paying more attention to the text on the bottom of the dial. Mine says “Co-Axial Master Chronometer 150m/500ft.” I learned that this is specific to the mechanical co-axial models. If your Seamaster has just “Seamaster 150m/500ft” at the bottom, the process might be different. So, always check the manual, folks!

And yeah, I learned my lesson. Now, even though I know how to set the date, I still get a little nervous every time I have to do it. But hey, at least I haven’t broken anything… yet.

It’s funny how something as simple as setting the date on a watch can turn into such an adventure. But that’s part of the fun of owning these intricate little machines, right? You learn something new every day, and sometimes, you just gotta laugh at yourself.
