Primer or Moisturizer First? Easy Skincare Steps.

Okay, so I’ve been messing around with my makeup routine lately, trying to figure out the best order for things. The big question on my mind was: moisturizer before primer, or after? It seems like everyone has a different opinion, so I decided to just try it both ways and see what happened. Here’s the lowdown on my little experiment.

Primer or Moisturizer First? Easy Skincare Steps.

Round 1: Moisturizer First

I started with my usual morning skincare. Washed my face, used a toner, and then slapped on my everyday moisturizer. I made sure to give it a good few minutes to really sink in – you know, so it wouldn’t be all slippery and weird when I put on the primer.

The Process:

  • Cleanse.
  • Tone.
  • Moisturize (and wait!).
  • Primer.
  • Foundation, etc.

Once the moisturizer felt absorbed, I applied my go-to primer. It felt pretty normal going on. Then I did the rest of my makeup – foundation, concealer, the whole shebang. Throughout the day, I kept checking my makeup in the mirror. My skin looked, well, hydrated, which is always a win. My makeup stayed in place pretty well, and I didn’t notice any extra oiliness or anything like that. Solid, standard result, not much to complain about.

Round 2: Primer First

The next day, I flipped the script. Skincare routine stayed the same, up until the moisturizer part.

The Process:

  • Tone.
  • Primer.
  • Moisturize.
  • Foundation, etc.

I put the primer on before my moisturizer. It felt…different. I was worried the moisturizer wouldn’t absorb properly, sitting on the primer. To combat it, I applied a smaller amount of my moisture than usual day. I carefully patted it onto my skin, trying not to disturb the primer underneath.

Honestly, this felt a little strange. The moisturizer just didn’t seem to sink in as well. After I put on my foundation, things looked okay at first, but by lunchtime, my skin was looking a bit drier than usual. Also some foundation seemed to cling to certain areas, creating an unblended, patchy look. It wasn’t a total disaster, but it definitely wasn’t as good as the day before.

The Verdict

For me, and my skin (which is kinda normal, leaning a bit towards dry sometimes), moisturizer definitely goes before primer. It just made my makeup look better and last longer. The primer-first method felt weird and didn’t give me the results I wanted. I think it is the best order in my makeup routine.

But hey, everyone’s skin is different. Maybe if you have super oily skin, the primer-first thing might work better? It’s all about experimenting and finding what works for you. Just thought I’d share my little test in case it helps someone else out there!
