Grabbed These on a Whim
Okay so my old running kicks were basically falling apart after 300+ miles. Saw these bright orange New Balance 740s on clearance at the outlet last Tuesday. Figured hey, New Balance usually fits my wide feet decently and that neon color might actually stop me from tripping over curbs in the dark.
First Run Test Disaster
Took ’em straight out the box for a 5K neighborhood loop Thursday morning. Right away I noticed two things: that cushy sole feels like walking on marshmallows which was awesome for my bad knees, but holy heck my heels were sliding around inside like I was wearing buckets. Had to stop twice to re-tie the laces super tight. By mile 2 the rubbing on my pinky toe felt like someone holding a lighter to it. Finished the run limping with a blister the size of a quarter.
Breaking Them In Properly
Decided not to give up yet. Wore these suckers just for walking my dog every morning for a week straight, doubled up on socks. That actually helped a ton! The padding molded to my feet better after about 20 miles total. Did another 5K yesterday and zero blisters this time. Still using runner’s knot lacing though – no way I’m trusting that heel slip otherwise.
What Works Awesome
- That cushioning tho: Legit feels like bouncing on clouds even on concrete
- Surprise grip: Soles held up great when I accidentally stepped on wet leaves mid-run
- Style points: Got three compliments from neighbors just this week
What Still Bugs Me
- Size mess: Had to go a full size down from my regular NBs
- Heel slippage: Only stays put if I lace them like a straightjacket
- Rain test fail: Feet got soaked through the mesh after 5 minutes in drizzle
Would I buy these again? Honestly probably not at full price, but for $60 on sale they’re alright now that I’ve basically rebuilt my feet around them. Good gym shoe, maybe short runs if you don’t mind looking like a traffic cone.
