Okay, so I’ve always been a bit envious of those folks with naturally sun-kissed hair. My hair is naturally pretty dark, and I’ve always wanted to lighten it up a bit without, you know, totally frying it with bleach. So, I started digging around for some natural ways to do it, and here’s what I’ve been trying!

My DIY Hair Lightening Journey
First, I grabbed some lemons. I’d heard that lemon juice could work, and I figured it was worth a shot. I squeezed a couple of lemons into a bowl, then mixed the juice with some water in a spray bottle. I’m not gonna lie, I was a little nervous about spraying straight-up lemon juice on my hair, so the water helped me feel a bit better.
- Step 1: Find some lemons.
- Step 2: Juice ’em!
- Step 3: Mix with water, put in spray bottle.
Then, I went outside – sunshine is supposed to help activate the lemon juice, or something like that. I sprayed my hair all over, making sure to get it pretty damp, and then just chilled in the sun for about an hour. Honestly, it felt pretty good, like a little spa treatment for my hair. I did notice it start to feel a little stiff.
After that, I hopped in the shower and washed my hair with my regular shampoo and conditioner. I have to say, it did seem a little bit lighter, but not a huge difference. So, I repeated this process a few more times over the next couple of weeks.
Next, I tried honey. Apparently, honey has some natural lightening properties too! I mixed about a quarter cup of honey with half a cup of water. It was super sticky, so I added a bit more water to make it easier to apply. I slathered this mixture all over my hair, put on a shower cap (to keep things from getting too messy), and left it on for about an hour, maybe an hour and a half? Again, I washed my hair normally.
I did my best to keep things tidy and I was suprised about how it went.

Between the lemon and the honey, I definitely saw some lightening. It’s not a dramatic change, like I went from black to blonde or anything, but my hair definitely has some lighter, warmer tones now. It looks more… sun-kissed, I guess! It’s also pretty soft, which is a bonus. I think maybe the honey helped with that.
I’m going to keep experimenting with these methods. Maybe I’ll try adding some chamomile tea to the mix next time, I’ve heard that can help too! It’s kind of a fun little project, and it’s way cheaper (and probably healthier) than going to the salon for highlights. Plus, my hair smells vaguely of lemons and honey, which isn’t a bad thing.
