Looking for simple plus size fall outfits for daily wear? Style them perfectly with these tips!

Alright everyone, so fall is definitely here. You know that feeling when the air gets a little crisp in the morning? Yeah, that hit me last week, and my first thought was, “Ugh, what am I going to wear?” My summer stuff just wasn’t cutting it anymore, and honestly, I was kind of excited to pull out some cozier things. So, I decided to dedicate a weekend to figuring out some plus size fall outfits.

Starting with the Closet Dive

First things first, I had to see what I already owned. I dragged out all my fall and winter bins from the top of the closet. It’s always a bit of a surprise what you find, right? Some things I was happy to see, like a couple of my favorite oversized sweaters. But then there were those pieces… you know the ones. The “I’ll fit into this someday” pile, or the “Why did I ever buy this?” stuff. I made a firm decision to be realistic this year.

I started trying things on. Comfort is key for me, especially with plus size clothing. If it pulls, or pinches, or I can’t breathe, it’s a no-go. I found a few pairs of jeans that still fit well, mostly darker washes which I like for fall. Some older knit tops were still good too, perfect for layering.

Identifying the Gaps and Making a (Small) List

After sorting through my existing wardrobe, I realized I was missing a few key things. I jotted down a small list:

I didn’t want to go crazy buying a whole new wardrobe. It was more about finding pieces that could work with what I already had. I did a bit of online window shopping, just to get ideas for styles and colors. I wasn’t looking for specific brands, more just the general vibe I was going for.

The Hunt and Putting It All Together

So, I ventured out. I was looking for that perfect cardigan first. I found a really nice, chunky knit one in a sort of oatmeal color. It felt super soft, and the fit was generous without being sloppy. Score!

Then, for boots, I found a pair of dark brown ankle boots with a low, block heel. Easy to walk in, which is a must. I also picked up a couple of those long-sleeved tops in a burgundy and a forest green.

Back home, it was time to play dress-up. This is the fun part, but also where things can go wrong, haha! I started pairing my new finds with my older stuff.

Outfit idea one: One of my existing pairs of dark wash jeans, the new forest green long-sleeved top, and the new oatmeal cardigan thrown over it. I added my new ankle boots. Felt good! Super comfortable, but still put-together enough for going out for coffee or running errands.

Outfit idea two: I have a pair of black ponte leggings that are thicker than regular leggings. I paired these with an older, longer tunic sweater I own, and then tried them with the new ankle boots. That worked too! If it gets colder, I can add a scarf.

Another thing I focused on was layering. A simple camisole under a button-down shirt (left open) with a cardigan on top gives you options if the temperature changes throughout the day. I tried this with a plaid flannel shirt I’ve had for ages, and it looked pretty good.

My Final Thoughts on the Process

Honestly, just taking the time to go through everything made a huge difference. I rediscovered some pieces I’d forgotten about, and getting rid of the stuff that just didn’t work anymore was so freeing. For me, plus size fall outfits are all about comfort, good fit, and pieces I can mix and match. I’m not chasing trends, I’m just trying to feel good in what I wear.

So, that was my little adventure in getting my fall wardrobe sorted. It wasn’t about spending a ton of money, but more about being intentional with what I have and adding a few versatile pieces. Hopefully, sharing my process gives you some ideas if you’re doing the same thing!
