John Candy Casio watch: A classic timepiece for movie fans

So, I was watching “Planes, Trains, and Automobiles” the other night, a classic, right? And I noticed John Candy’s character, Del Griffith, is wearing a watch. I’m a bit of a watch guy, so naturally, I got curious. What was it? I paused the movie, squinted at the screen, but I just couldn’t make it out. It’s pretty blurry.

First, I thought maybe it’s a well-known model. Neal Page, Steve Martin’s character, he’s got a Piaget Polo 8673, which I easily figured out. Fancy, right? But Del’s watch? No clue. It looked kinda sporty, maybe a digital one.

Then, I dived into the internet, hoping someone else had solved this mystery. I wasn’t the only one who’s wondered about this. I saw a few forum posts and some discussions, people were throwing around ideas. Some were guessing, some were certain, but no real solid answer.

I started looking into Casio watches from the ’80s. That’s when the movie was made, so it made sense. I spent hours browsing through old catalogs and pictures. There are a ton of models! It felt like looking for a needle in a haystack. I looked at some on eBay and stuff, but they weren’t quite right.

I kept digging. Looked at more pictures of John Candy from the movie, trying to get a better look at the watch. I even tried to enhance some screenshots, but it was still too fuzzy. The watch was just too small on the screen.

Honestly, I almost gave up. It’s just a watch in a movie, right? But I got hooked. I wanted to know! It became like a personal mission or something. I spent a few more days on it, on and off. I felt like a real detective, but a pretty bad one.

Finally, after going through what felt like a million Casio models. I stumbled upon a few that looked similar and seemed like likely candidates. Then, I found more clear photos and was able to identify it.

It’s definitely a Casio. I’m not sure about the exact model, but it has a similar shape and style to others. It was a real “aha!” moment for me. It’s not a definitive answer, but it’s the closest I could get. Case closed… well, kinda.
