Okay, so I needed to get some materials for a project I was working on, specifically some decent wood that wasn’t warped like you sometimes find at the bigger stores. I’d heard about T.W. Perry, the one over in Silver Spring, from a buddy who does contracting work. Decided I’d give them a shot.

So, I drove over there one weekday morning, hoping to beat any rush. Finding the place wasn’t too hard, it’s got that classic lumber yard feel, you know? Not like a giant retail warehouse. Pulled into the parking area, which seemed mostly filled with trucks, always a good sign I guess.

Getting Started Inside

Walked into the main building. It felt different, more focused. Less browsing, more business. Went up to the counter area. Had my list ready – specific dimensions, types of wood, some hardware bits. The person behind the counter actually looked at my list, asked a couple questions about the project to make sure I was getting the right stuff. That was appreciated.

Finding the Goods

They directed me out to the yard for the lumber. It’s a pretty big area, stacks of wood everywhere. Found the section I needed. Took my time picking through the boards, looking for straight ones. You always gotta do this part carefully.

  • Found the pressure-treated posts I needed.
  • Located the specific type of plywood sheeting.
  • Picked out some trim boards.

Getting the heavy stuff onto a cart was the next step. Looked around and found one of the yard guys driving a forklift. Flagged him down. He was helpful, loaded the big pieces onto a sturdy cart for me. No fuss, just got it done.

Checkout and Loading Up

Pushed the cart back towards the building to pay. They calculated everything, including the lumber cuts I didn’t need but they offer. Grabbed the screws and hangers I needed from the inside store area too. The checkout process itself was pretty quick. Paid up.

Then came the loading part. Backed my truck up to the loading area. Transferred everything from the cart to the truck bed. Took a few minutes, but the materials felt solid, good quality. Drove home feeling like I’d accomplished something. The wood worked out great for the project later that week. It was a straightforward experience, got what I needed, decent quality. Felt like a proper builder’s supply place.
