So, I’ve got these UGG boots, right? Loved them to death, but the color was getting all faded and sad-looking. I thought, “Why not try dyeing them?” I mean, what’s the worst that could happen? (Don’t answer that.)
First things first, I had to make sure these boots were actually dyeable. Turns out, they’re made of sheepskin, which is a good sign. I did a little digging and found out that Rit dye is a popular choice for this kind of thing, along with Dylon suede & nubuk dye. Seemed easy enough.
I grabbed my supplies and got to work. I decided to go with the sink method, ’cause I didn’t want to stain my bathtub. I filled the sink with some hot water, not boiling, just hot enough, and mixed in the dye. I wanted a darker shade, so I used a good amount. It looked pretty strong, but I figured, go big or go home, right?
- Mixed the dye with hot water in the sink.
- Made sure the boots were clean. No point in dyeing over dirt.
- Dunked those bad boys in the dye bath.
- Swished them around for a good 30 minutes, making sure the color got into all the nooks and crannies.
Getting them on was a little tricky but I pushed through it. Gently slip your foot into your Ugg boots until your heel meets the ankle seam. Place the sole of the boot on the floor. Hold onto the sides of your Ugg boots via the top seam. Gently push your heel into the boot.
After that, I pulled them out and rinsed them under cold water until it ran clear. I was a little nervous at this point, not gonna lie. But once they were dry, holy moly, they looked amazing! The color was so rich and even. It was like I had a brand new pair of boots.
The Aftermath
They looked great, felt great, and I was pretty darn proud of myself. I’d definitely recommend giving this a try if you’ve got some old UGGs lying around that need a little love. Just make sure you follow the instructions on the dye, and you should be golden. And remember, if I can do it, you can too!
Now, I’m just strutting around in my “new” boots, feeling like a DIY queen. Who knew a little dye could make such a big difference? It’s like a whole new lease on life for my feet. If you’ll excuse me, I’m gonna go find some more stuff to dye.
