Okay, here’s my story about becoming a big plus-size model:

So, I’ve always been a bigger girl, you know, always loved my curves. Never really thought about modeling, though. I was working as a makeup artist, just doing my thing, when this one photographer noticed me. He was like, “You’ve got a great look, have you ever considered modeling?” I laughed it off at first, but he was persistent. He took some test shots, and I gotta say, I was surprised at how good they looked!
That got me thinking, maybe I could actually do this. I started doing some research online. I found out that there’s this whole world of plus-size modeling. Apparently, the average size of women has increased, so there was demand! I learned that agencies usually look for girls who are 5’9″ or taller, but there are also opportunities for shorter girls like me, especially in commercial modeling. I also discovered that being “scouted” is the quickest way to get into the industry, but it’s also super hard because you basically have to be discovered by a professional.
First thing I did was get some professional photos taken. I mean, if I wanted to be a model, I needed some decent pictures, right? I found a local photographer who had experience with plus-size models, and we did a photoshoot. It was a bit awkward at first, posing and all, but I got the hang of it. When I saw the finished photos, I was blown away. I actually looked like a model!
Next, I started looking for modeling agencies. I found a few that specialized in plus-size models and sent them my photos. I also created an online portfolio, just a simple website with my pictures and measurements. I knew it was a long shot, but I figured it was worth a try.
- I spent hours looking through different agencies, reading about their requirements, and figuring out which ones might be a good fit for me.
- I made sure to tailor my submissions to each agency, highlighting my best features and explaining why I thought I would be a good fit for them.
- I also started following a bunch of plus-size models on social media, seeing what they were up to, and trying to learn from them.
While I was waiting to hear back from agencies, I started building my social media presence. I created an Instagram account specifically for modeling and started posting regularly. I used hashtags like #plussizemodel and #curvy, and I engaged with other models and brands. It was slow going at first, but I gradually started gaining followers.

Rejection, Rejection, Rejection
I got a lot of rejections. Like, a lot. Most agencies never even responded to my emails. It was discouraging, to say the least. But I didn’t give up. I kept submitting, kept posting, kept trying. I figured, even if one agency said yes, it would all be worth it.
Then, one day, I got an email from a small agency in my city. They liked my look and wanted to meet with me. I was so excited! I went in for a meeting, did a test shoot, and they signed me on the spot! I couldn’t believe it. I was officially a plus-size model.
Since then, I’ve done a few photoshoots and even walked in a couple of local fashion shows. It’s not easy, there’s a lot of competition, and the pay isn’t always great. But I love it. I love being able to represent other plus-size women and show that beauty comes in all shapes and sizes. I even got to walk during New York Fashion Week once, which was a dream come true!
My advice to anyone who wants to become a plus-size model is to be persistent, be confident, and be yourself. It’s not easy, but it’s definitely possible. And it’s so worth it when you finally get that first gig and see yourself rocking those curves on camera or on the runway. Just remember to stay positive, keep practicing, and never give up on your dream.
