Get Started with PRX Something: Your Easy Guide

Okay, so I wanted to mess around with this thing called PRX, and I figured I’d jot down what I did. It all started when I stumbled upon their website. Didn’t really know what I was getting into, but I was curious.

First thing I did was to look around their site to try to understand what is this PRX. Turns out that they only work with some US-based, non-commercial, something called terrestrial radio stations. That’s a bummer for international folks or internet radio guys.

I clicked around, and it looked like you gotta create an account to do anything. Made sense, so I went ahead and signed up. There were some options, like “I’m a producer” and whatnot. I just picked whatever seemed right and moved on.

Signing up process

  • Fill in some basic info. Name, email, that sort of thing.
  • Choose account type. I picked “Producer” because why not.
  • Agree to their terms. You know, the usual stuff you never read.
  • Verify my email. They sent a confirmation email, had to click a thing.

After I was in, they kept talking about “pieces.” I guess that’s what they call the stuff you upload. Anyway, I tried to upload a random audio file I had lying around. Just wanted to see how it works, you know?

Uploading was easy enough. Clicked a button, chose my file, and boom, it was there. Then they asked me a bunch of questions about the “piece.” Title, description, who made it, all that jazz. Filled it out as best as I could.

Then I decided to see what else I can do. It was so much like some kind of radio exchange market. There were a bunch of other “pieces” from different people. Some were free, some you had to pay for. I clicked on a few, listened to some snippets. Pretty cool, I guess.

But here’s the kicker. They say they’ve paid out over a million dollars to producers. A million bucks! That’s wild. Makes you think, maybe there’s something to this whole thing. I did hear about how to disable the subscription notice and enterprise repositories that are not free. It was like some kind of a forum talking about how to install the OS, so I guess some other time I will check that out.

I did spend a bit more time poking around. Downloaded a couple of freebies, just to see how that works. It was all pretty straightforward. Click, download, done. They even had a thing where you could get in touch with the producers. I didn’t try that, but it’s there if you want it.

Honestly, I don’t know if I’ll actually use this thing for real. But it was fun to explore. Maybe I’ll upload some actual stuff later, who knows. For now, it’s just an interesting little experiment.

Oh, and they have some guides and stuff, if you’re into that. Like, how to write “underwriting copy.” I have no idea what that is, but it sounds important. Maybe I’ll check that out later, too.

Anyway, that’s pretty much my experience with PRX. Not bad for a random afternoon adventure.
