Okay, so, I gotta tell you about this little adventure I had with my Chanel bag. You know, the classic flap one with the gold chain and the double C logo? Yeah, that one. It’s my baby, I take it everywhere, and I’ve had it for a few years now. But a couple of weeks ago, disaster struck.

I was rushing to get out the door, late for a meeting as usual, and I swung my bag over my shoulder a little too hard. Next thing I know, I hear this awful clinking sound. I look down, and there it is – the little screw that holds the chain to the flap had come loose and fallen off somewhere. And, of course, I couldn’t find it anywhere. Panic time! I mean, a Chanel bag with a broken chain? Unacceptable!
First things first, I called up the Chanel boutique where I bought the bag. The lady on the phone was super nice, but she said they don’t do repairs in-house. What? She gave me the number of some authorized repair center, I called them right away, and they say they can do that. They say it will cost me 200 USD for this job. I don’t know why they charge so much, that’s crazy! I think I need to find a more reasonable solution.
Then I remembered this guy I know who’s kind of a handyman. He’s always fixing stuff around his house, and he’s pretty good with tools. I figured, why not give him a shot? So I called him up, explained the situation, and sent him some pictures of the damage.
He said he could help me, but he needed to check the damage in person. I went to his place, and he looked at my bag carefully. He told me that he did not have the original part, but he could try to find a similar screw to fix it for me. I agreed without hesitation.
He took out his toolbox, which was filled with all sorts of screws and bolts, and started trying to find a match. After a few minutes of rummaging around, he found one that looked almost identical to the original screw. It wasn’t gold-plated like the Chanel one, but it was the same size and shape.

Then came the tricky part. He had to carefully screw the new screw into the tiny hole on the bag’s flap, making sure not to damage the leather or the surrounding hardware. He used a tiny screwdriver and worked with the precision of a surgeon. I watched him, holding my breath, hoping he wouldn’t mess it up. It took him a good ten minutes, but he finally got it in there.
- He attached the chain back to the flap.
- Checked to make sure it was secure.
- Voila! My bag was fixed!
The Result
I was so relieved! It wasn’t a perfect match, but it was barely noticeable. And the best part? He only charged me 20 bucks for his trouble. I couldn’t believe how much money I saved by just asking a friend for help instead of going through the official repair route. Lesson learned: sometimes, a little DIY or a handyman friend can save the day (and your wallet)! From now on, I’m definitely going to be more careful with my precious Chanel, but it’s good to know that a broken chain isn’t the end of the world.
