Alright, listen up, y’all. I’m gonna tell ya how I got into this whole makeup thing. It wasn’t no fancy-schmancy journey, let me tell ya. More like a bumpy road with a whole lot of trial and error, you know?

First off, I didn’t go to no fancy school or nothin’. Heck, I barely finished high school myself. But I always liked messin’ with colors. You know, like them little crayons kids use? I’d be smearing them all over my face, makin’ myself look like a clown. My ma used to yell at me, “Girl, what in the world you doin’ to yourself?” But I didn’t care. It was fun, ya know?
Then, when I got older, I started playin’ around with my ma’s old makeup. That cheap stuff from the drugstore, you know the kind? It wasn’t pretty, but I made it work. I’d practice on myself, tryin’ to copy them ladies in the magazines. Lord, I looked a mess most of the time! But I kept at it. Practiced and practiced, till I got a little bit better. I figured if I wanna become a makeup artist, gotta start somewhere, right?
- First thing I learned was, you gotta have good stuff. Them cheap drugstore things ain’t gonna cut it. You need good brushes, good powders, good everything. It costs a pretty penny, but it’s worth it.
- Next, I learned you gotta know what you’re doin’. Can’t just slap stuff on your face and call it a day. Gotta know about colors, about skin tones, about all that fancy stuff. I watched videos, read books, anything I could get my hands on. Sometimes I asked the ladies at the beauty counter for tips, they’d always look at me funny but hey I still learnt something. Slowly but surely, I started to get the hang of it.
- And lastly, you gotta be nice to people. Nobody wants a grumpy makeup artist. Gotta smile, gotta be friendly, gotta make people feel comfortable. That’s just as important as knowing how to put on makeup.
So, how’d I actually start gettin’ paid for it? Well, word of mouth, mostly. I started doin’ makeup for my friends and family. Then they told their friends, and their friends told their friends, and so on. Pretty soon, I had a little side hustle goin’. Nothin’ big, mind you, but enough to make a little extra cash. And you know what? I loved it. I loved makin’ people feel pretty, makin’ them feel good about themselves.
It wasn’t easy, though. There were plenty of times I wanted to quit. Times I felt like I wasn’t good enough, like I didn’t know what I was doin’. But I kept pushin’. I kept learnin’. And I kept gettin’ better. I think makeup artist training is an ongoing process, always somethin new to pick up.
One day, I got a call from a local photographer. She’d seen my work on somebody and wanted me to do the makeup for a photoshoot. I was nervous as a cat in a room full of rocking chairs, but I said yes. And that photoshoot changed everything. It got my name out there, got me more clients, got me more opportunities. I was so nervous I almost messed up the whole celebrity make up artist gig, good thing I pulled through.

Now, I’m not gonna lie, it’s still hard work. Long hours, demanding clients, constant pressure to be perfect. But I wouldn’t trade it for the world. I love what I do. I love makin’ people feel beautiful. And I love that I get to do it every single day. This ain’t no easy makeup program, but if you put your mind to it, you’ll figure it out.
And that, my friends, is how I became a makeup artist. No fancy degree, no big connections, just hard work and a whole lotta passion. So if you got a dream, don’t let nobody tell you you can’t do it. You just gotta go out there and make it happen. You hear me? You want it? Go get it, girl. Or boy. Whoever you are. Just go out there and get it.
Becoming a makeup artist ain’t for the faint of heart, you gotta keep trying. Even if you mess up sometimes, that’s ok. Nobody is perfect right off the bat. Just keep practicing those makeup styles and trends, and you’ll get there eventually.
And don’t go thinkin’ this is all just fun and games, it’s hard work. Lots of standing, lots of travelin, and lots of dealin’ with people. But like I said, if you love it, it’s worth it. So that’s my story on how to become a makeup artist or nail technician, well makeup at least. I ain’t got no clue about nails, that’s a whole different ball game.
