Okay, so, I was scrolling through some stuff online, and I came across these photos by Zoë Ghertner, yeah, that’s the name. They were tagged with “Hawaii,” and I was like, “Alright, let’s see what this is all about.” I’ve always been a sucker for good photography, especially when it involves nature and some artistic vibes.
So I started digging. Turns out, this Zoë person is pretty well-known, it seems. She has done photos for some magazines and has this whole aesthetic thing going on. Not really my cup of tea, to be frank, all fashion and high-end stuff. But these Hawaii photos, they were different. I had to check this out for myself.
Planning the Shoot
First things first, I needed a plan. I’m not a professional, but I do enjoy taking photos. So I thought, why not try to recreate something similar? Not to copy, but to get inspired, you know? I started to look into what makes these photos stand out. It’s like, they’re more than just pretty pictures of a place, there’s some kind of mood to them.
- Location Scouting: I found out that she’s done some shots in Kauai, this island in Hawaii. They call it the “Garden Isle.” Sounds fancy, right? I mean, I couldn’t just hop on a plane to Hawaii. I had to find something local that could give off a similar vibe.
- Gear Check: I don’t have any fancy equipment, just my trusty old camera and a couple of lenses. I figured that would be enough. It’s not about the gear, but how you use it, or something like that.
- Finding the Mood: This was the tricky part. I spent a lot of time looking at Zoë’s photos, trying to figure out what makes them tick. There’s this kind of eerie, mysterious vibe to them. I wanted to capture that somehow.
The Photo Shoot
I decided to hit up a local nature reserve, somewhere with lots of greenery and some rugged terrain. Not quite the Na Pali Coast, but it’s a start. I went early in the morning, hoping to catch that soft, morning light that photographers always talk about.
- Playing with Light: I experimented a lot with the light and shadows. Trying to get that dramatic effect, like in some of Zoë’s shots. It was tough, not gonna lie. Sometimes the sun was too harsh, or not enough.
- Finding the Right Angles: I tried different angles, shooting from low to the ground, looking up at the trees. It’s amazing how different things look when you change your perspective. I was crawling around, getting dirty, probably looked like a crazy person to anyone passing by.
- Capturing the Details: I also focused on the small stuff. Like, the texture of the leaves, the way the water flowed in the creek, that kind of thing. It’s these little details that can make a photo interesting.
Post-Processing
After the shoot, I went through all the photos. I picked out the ones that I thought had potential and did some editing. I’m no expert in Photoshop or anything, but I know the basics. I played with the colors, the contrast, trying to get that moody, atmospheric look.
- Color Grading: I found that desaturating the colors a bit gave the photos a more subdued, almost melancholic feel. It’s like, stripping away the bright, happy colors to reveal something a bit more raw and real.
- Adding Contrast: I also bumped up the contrast in some of the shots. This made the shadows deeper and the highlights brighter, creating more drama.
- Experimenting: I spent hours just experimenting, trying different things out. Some of it worked, some of it didn’t. It was a learning process, for sure.
The Result
In the end, I was pretty happy with how some of the photos turned out. They’re not exactly like Zoë Ghertner’s, but they have their own thing going on. It was a fun experiment, and I learned a lot. It made me appreciate the art of photography even more, and how much work goes into creating those amazing shots you see in magazines and online.
I think I might try this again sometime, maybe explore different themes or styles. It’s a good way to challenge yourself, you know? And to see the world in a different way. Plus, it’s just cool to create something, to capture a moment or a feeling, and to share it with others. I guess that’s what being a blogger is all about, right? Sharing your experiences and hoping that maybe, just maybe, you inspire someone else to go out and do something creative too.
