Drew Barrymore Scream Sweater Outfit Ideas (Recreate Her Iconic Horror Movie Fashion Moment)

Okay, so, I got this idea the other day, right? I was scrolling through Pinterest, just looking for some costume inspiration, and then it hit me – Drew Barrymore’s outfit from the opening scene of “Scream.” You know, that iconic look with the cream sweater? It’s so simple, yet so recognizable, I just had to try and recreate it.

First things first, I started looking for that sweater. Now, finding an exact match was not going to be easy, but I was determined. I searched through countless online stores, vintage shops, you name it. I even scoured my own closet, hoping I might have something similar. Nothing seemed to be just right. They were all either too thin, too thick, the wrong shade, or had the wrong neckline. I wanted that perfect, slightly oversized, ribbed look.

Finally, after days of searching, I stumbled upon this one sweater online. It wasn’t exactly the same, but it was close enough. It had that soft, creamy color, and the ribbing was pretty similar. I ordered it right away, my fingers crossed that it would look okay in person.

While I was waiting for the sweater to arrive, I started working on the other parts of the costume. I already had a pair of those classic 90s mom jeans in my closet, so that was easy. Then came the hair. I don’t have Drew’s naturally blonde locks, so I had to get a wig. I found a short, blonde bob wig online that looked just like her hairstyle in the movie.

The sweater finally arrived, and it was actually pretty good! A little big but I think it actually worked better that way, more like how Drew wore hers. I put it on with the jeans, added the wig, and then I found the most crucial prop of all – an old-school, oversized landline phone. Luckily, I had one in storage from the old days.

I put the whole outfit together, looked in the mirror, and I have to say, I was pretty impressed! It really did capture that iconic Drew Barrymore look from “Scream.” Of course, I had to act out the scene, phone in hand, pretending to talk to Ghostface. It was a lot of fun. I also took some pictures to commemorate this little project.

Here’s what I used:

  • Cream-colored, ribbed sweater (slightly oversized)
  • Classic 90s mom jeans
  • Short, blonde bob wig
  • Oversized, old-school landline phone

It was such a fun little project, and it really brought back memories of watching that movie for the first time. It just goes to show that sometimes, the simplest costumes can be the most iconic and the most fun to put together.
