cabaret musical costumes: Top picks and where to find them!

Okay, so, let me tell you about this little project I got myself into, making costumes for a cabaret musical. I have always been into DIY stuff, you know, making things with my own hands. It is kind of my jam. So, when I heard about this local theater putting on a cabaret show, I thought, “Why not try making the costumes?”

First things first, I needed to figure out what kind of costumes we were talking about. I mean, “cabaret” can mean a lot of things, right? So, I started by doing some digging online. I browsed through a bunch of images on Pinterest, just to get a feel for the vibe. Lots of flashy stuff, you know, sequins, feathers, and all that jazz. I also checked out some online shops that sell costumes, just to see what’s out there. Found some pretty cool flapper dresses and some fancy suits. Ideally, a suit is perfect.

After I had a general idea, I started sketching some designs. Nothing too fancy, just some rough ideas on paper. I am no fashion designer, but I can draw a stick figure well enough to get my point across. I wanted the costumes to be eye-catching but also comfortable for the performers to move around in. I mean, they have got to dance and sing, right?

Next up, I had to actually make the costumes. I hit up a few fabric stores and bought a ton of materials. I am talking glitter fabric, satin, lace, and a whole lot of rhinestones. My living room quickly turned into a mini workshop, with fabric and sewing supplies everywhere. It was a beautiful mess, if I do say so myself.

I started with the simpler pieces, like the flapper dresses. I found some basic patterns online and modified them to fit my designs. Sewing is not really my forte, but I managed to put the pieces together without too many mishaps. There were a few times when I had to rip out seams and start over, but hey, that is part of the process, right?

  • Measure and cut the fabric: I carefully measured each performer and cut the fabric according to my patterns.
  • Sew the pieces together: This was the tricky part. I used my sewing machine for most of it, but some details, like the sequins, I had to sew by hand.
  • Add embellishments: Once the basic costumes were done, I added all the flashy stuff. I glued on rhinestones, sewed on feathers, and even added some fringe for that extra razzle-dazzle.

The suits were a bit more challenging. I decided to go for a classic, timeless look, something that would make the performers look sharp and sophisticated. I found a few vintage suits at a thrift store and used them as a base. I took them apart, adjusted the fit, and added some unique details, like colorful linings and custom buttons. It was a lot of work, but I was really happy with how they turned out.

Trying them on

Once all the costumes were done, I had the performers come in for a fitting. This was the moment of truth. I was so nervous, hoping that everything would fit and look good on them. Luckily, it all worked out pretty well. There were a few minor adjustments here and there, but overall, everyone was happy with their costumes.

Seeing the costumes come to life on stage was such a rewarding experience. All those hours of work, all the late nights, it was all worth it. The performers looked amazing, and the costumes really added to the overall vibe of the show. I felt so proud of what I had accomplished. It was a lot of hard work, but I would totally do it again. It is moments like these that make all the effort worthwhile. Plus, I got a whole new appreciation for costume designers. They are the real MVPs!
