Okay, so I’ve been messing around with this black tie clutch idea for a while now, and let me tell you, it’s been a journey. I wanted something classy, you know? Something that screams “I’ve got my stuff together” even if I don’t, haha.

First off, I had to figure out what I actually wanted. I mean, a clutch is basically a small bag, right? But there are so many types! I spent hours scrolling through pictures online, and it was overwhelming. I didn’t need any fancy stuff, but I do need something that can go with a black tie.
Then, I started to notice this envelope shape. I saw this in a magazine, Altuzarra, they were showing off these clutches shaped like envelopes, and I thought, “That’s it!” It’s simple, but it’s also kind of unique. And for sure it is not something I would carry every day.
Making the Clutch
So, I grabbed some black faux leather because I’m not about to use real leather. I am not good at sewing, so it is a big challenge for me. I cut out the shape, which, surprisingly, was the easiest part, no kidding. It’s basically a rectangle with a triangle flap. Easy peasy.
Then came the hard part – actually putting it together. I tried sewing it by hand first, big mistake. I got needles everywhere, and my fingers were not happy. I borrowed a sewing machine from my neighbor.
- Cut out the fabric
- Sew the sides together
- Add a lining (optional but makes it look nicer)
- Attach a closure, like a snap or a button
After a few tries (and a few curse words), I finally had something that resembled a clutch. It wasn’t perfect, but it was mine. I even managed to add a little snap button so it wouldn’t just fly open.

I’ve got to say, even though it was a bit of a struggle, I’m pretty proud of myself. I made a black tie clutch! It’s not just a bag, it’s like a little piece of my effort, you know? And it looks pretty darn good with a fancy dress, if I do say so myself. I can’t wait to show it off at the next fancy event I go to. Who knows, maybe I’ll start a new trend or something, haha!
