Alright, so the other day my ankles were freezing. Seriously cold. I was just sitting around, trying to get some work done, and couldn’t concentrate because, well, cold ankles. Annoying, right? I thought about buying some leg warmers, but then I remembered that box of yarn I’ve had stashed away forever.

Getting Started
First thing, I had to actually find that box. Took a bit of digging in the closet, behind some other stuff I totally forgot I had. Found it. Loads of odds and ends of yarn in there. I picked out this soft, kinda chunky grey yarn. Had almost two full balls of it, seemed like enough. Then I needed knitting needles. Found a pair that looked about the right size for the yarn. Honestly, I just eyeball this stuff most of the time.
The Actual Making Part
So I sat down and cast on some stitches. How many? No idea, just sort of measured it against my leg until it looked like it might wrap around my calf okay. I decided to just do a simple stitch, like a basic knit-one-purl-one ribbing thing. Thought that would make them stretchy.
- Cast on the stitches.
- Started knitting in the round. Well, tried to. Using double-pointed needles is always fiddly for me at the start. Dropped stitches a couple of times. Grumbled a bit. Picked them back up.
- Kept going, row after row. Just simple ribbing. It gets boring after a while, but it’s easy to do while watching TV.
- Tried it on my leg every so often to check the length. Wanted them long enough to scrunch up a bit, you know?
Finished the first one after a couple of evenings. Just cast off loosely at the top. Looked okay. A bit wobbly, maybe, but definitely leg-warmer shaped.
Making the Second One Match (Sort Of)
This is always the tricky part. Getting the second one the same size. I counted the cast-on stitches from the first one (should have written it down!). Tried my best to keep the tension the same. Knitted it up just like the first. Compared them side-by-side constantly.
It came out… close enough. Let’s be honest, they’re never perfectly identical when I make them. One always seems slightly tighter or looser. But who’s going to be inspecting my leg warmers that closely, right?

The Result? Pretty Cute!
So now I have a pair of grey, ribbed leg warmers. They’re soft, they’re warm, and they were basically free since I used up that old yarn. They definitely look homemade, not like something slick from a store, but I kinda like that. They do the job – my ankles are finally warm! Pulled them on right away. Yeah, pretty pleased with this little project. Simple, useful, and used up some stash. Success!
