Okay, so, I’ve been messing around with this idea for a while now – what happens when you make jewelry ads with only one race? It sounds simple, but trust me, it’s been a ride. So, let me walk you through what I did and what I found out.

First off, I started digging into why this even matters. Turns out, the ad industry has a pretty bad track record with diversity. I mean, did you know that only 12% of creative directors are women? That’s nuts! And it’s not just about gender. The LGBTQIA+ community makes up 5.6% of the population, but they’re only in 1.7% of ads. That’s way off.

So, I thought, let’s see what happens if we flip the script. I got my hands on some real ads and even used AI to create a few of my own. The goal was simple: create a bunch of ads where only one race was featured and then compare those to ads that had a mix of people.

What I Did

  • Gathered a bunch of ads. Some were real, some I made with AI.
  • Showed these ads to a group of people.
  • Asked them what they thought about the ads.

Now, the fun part. I showed these ads to a bunch of different people and asked for their opinions. I had “segregated” ads – you know, one with only Black models, another with only Asian models – and then some mixed ones. And guess what? People found the segregated ads to be less effective. Yeah, they didn’t like them as much.

Here’s the kicker: inclusive ads are a big deal. People said they were 62% more likely to pick a brand that had inclusive ads first. That’s huge! Plus, these ads led to 3.5% higher sales in the short term and 16% higher in the long term. So, not only do people like these ads more, but they also make more money for the companies. Win-win, right?

From what I saw, it’s pretty clear. When brands show a mix of different people in their ads, they connect better with more people. It makes the brand look better, and people are more likely to buy their stuff. It’s a no-brainer.

So, after all this, I’m convinced. If you’re making ads, you gotta be inclusive. It’s not just the right thing to do, it’s also good for business. I mean, who doesn’t want to connect with more people and make more money? It’s a win-win.
