Okay, so I’ve been digging into the history of luxury brands lately, and let me tell you, the story of Goyard is something else. I mean, we’re talking about a brand that’s been around since the late 18th century. That’s a lot of history, right?
So, here’s what I found out. The whole thing started way back in 1792. Yeah, you heard that right, 1792! This guy, Pierre-François Martin, he set up this shop called Maison Martin in Paris. They were all about making trunks, you know, for fancy folks, like the French aristocracy. Apparently, they were really good at it because word got around, and Maison Martin became known for top-notch craftsmanship.
Now, fast forward a bit to 1853. That’s when François Goyard took the reins, probably learned a thing or two from old Martin, and renamed the company to Maison Goyard. What I found interesting is that this guy, Francois, he was inspired by his ancestors who were log drivers. They used to move firewood from some forests to Paris. I guess that’s where the whole idea of sturdy, reliable trunks came from. You know, it connects to his family history. That was so meaningful.
Anyway, under Goyard, the brand just kept getting bigger and better. They stuck to their guns, focusing on quality and that signature craftsmanship. They started using this special coated canvas, they call it “Goyardine,” and it became a hallmark of their products. And let me tell you, it’s tough stuff. Think lightweight but super durable. I’ve been eyeing one of their totes, maybe the Anjou or the St. Louis. They’re supposed to be amazing.
Their products became very popular, and I found out that they even have a store on Mount Street in London. You can go there and get your stuff personalized. They do this hand-painting thing that makes each piece unique.
