My Bag Needed Some Love
So I grabbed my Dooney Belvedere Ambler yesterday – the tan one with rainbow trim – and man, it looked rough. Had coffee stains near the zipper, dirt smudges on the bottom corners, and some weird chalky stuff on the handles. First time cleaning this leather baby so I was sweating a little.

What I Used
- Soft toothbrush
- Baby wipes (unscented)
- Cotton cloths
- Distilled water (my tap water sucks)
Ditched fancy cleaners cause last time I used leather conditioner on another bag it got sticky. Saw online someone ruined their Dooney with saddle soap so nope, kept it stupid simple.
How I Cleaned It
Started by wiping down the whole bag with dry cotton cloth just to get loose dust off. Then dabbed baby wipes on those coffee stains near the zipper – pressed gently in circles like rubbing sleepy eyes. Went soft cause that trim stitching is tight.
Next tackled the handle gunk: dipped toothbrush in distilled water, scrubbed LIGHTLY like petting a hamster. White stuff flaked off surprisingly easy. Bottom corners needed muscle though – pressed wipe hard into leather grain while making tiny circles.
Let everything air dry overnight away from sun. No heat blowdryers cause leather hates that – remember my friend’s bag cracked? Yeah no thanks.
What Actually Worked
Turns out:

Baby wipes are magic on surface stains but don’t soak the leather.
Toothbrush + water got in crevices without scratching.
Time mattered most – rushing = ruining good bags.
Final Results
Checked this morning: coffee stains gone completely, handle gunk disappeared, corner dirt faded like 90%. Still has some “character” marks but looks loved now, not trashed. Honestly shocked basic stuff worked this well. Will do this every 3 months maybe?
