Grabbing stuff from my closet
Okay so last weekend I had this fancy summer BBQ party invite pop up in my texts. Instantly went “ugh, what the heck do I even wear?” because you know how those things go – supposed to look cute but not try-hard. Also? Pure hot out there. Sweat-city. Figured it’s time to mess around with some skimpy pieces I keep shoved in the back.

Dug into that black hole I call a wardrobe and pulled out:
- That white crop top from that fast fashion place last year – you know, the one with the cute criss-cross back but is kinda see-through?
- These high-waisted denim shorts, probably too short for anything but the beach.
- Random chunky belt thing I bought online that time.
- Seriously worn-out slide sandals.
The First Try Disaster
Thought I’d start simple. Put on the crop top and shorts. Checked the mirror. Bruh. Looked like I escaped a 90s music video. And not in a good way. The shorts were digging into my stomach making weird rolls, the crop top felt way too bare up top without something extra. Forgot how sheer it was – my bra lines showed like crazy. Felt messy, not cute. Scrapped that combo entirely.
Throwing Accessories At The Problem
Decided maybe accessories save me? Grabbed the chunky brown belt and slapped it over the shorts. Looked… weird. Like I was trying too hard. Then tried my old slides. Pure garbage. They screamed “flip-flops for the pool.” Wanted effortless chic, got “forgot to dress properly.”
The Lightbulb Moment
Got mad. Actually sat on my messy floor staring at the clothes pile. Remembered this long flowy kimono thingy I bought on vacation ages ago. Found it crumpled under a sweater. Took it out. It’s like a light purple with these big floral patterns, thin cotton.
Threw it on open over the tiny top and shorts. Game. Changer. The see-through top problem? Gone. Bare shoulders? Still show a bit but with edge. Shorts didn’t look like only shorts anymore. Added structure without hiding the outfit. Felt breezy for the heat, covered arms without feeling stuffy.

Kicked off those ugly slides and stole my sister’s simple gold strappy sandals. Low heel, just enough fancy.
Final Touches & Reality Check
Played with accessories finally! Found a small gold necklace, tiny hoops. Belt stayed off – too much with the kimono. Hair in a messy bun because hot days + hair down = rage. Little crossbody bag from another failed outfit attempt. Checked the mirror again.
Surprised myself. Looked put-together, kinda cool, definitely summery. Kimono made the skimpy bits look intentional, not accidental. Sandals lifted it up from beachwear. Tested movement – could eat, dance, sit without flashing everyone. Perfect for sweating in July heat.
Honest truth? Still hate strapless bras, shorts that ride up are annoying. But adding that one flowy layer? Absolute hack. Felt confident walking out, which is like 90% of the battle.
