Simple Steps: How to Clean a Purse Without Damaging It

Alright, let’s talk about how to clean a purse, you know, the kind of thing you carry your stuff in. I ain’t no fancy expert, but I’ve been cleaning purses for donkey’s years, and I can tell you a thing or two.

Simple Steps: How to Clean a Purse Without Damaging It

First off, what kind of purse are we talkin’ about? Is it one of them shiny leather ones, or maybe that soft, fuzzy kind they call suede? Or is it just plain old cloth? Makes a difference, you see.

For a leather purse, you gotta be gentle. Don’t go throwin’ it in the washin’ machine, Lord no! You’ll ruin it for sure. What I do is, I get me a bowl of cool water, not hot mind you, and squirt in a little bit of that dish soap, the kind you use for your plates. Just a little, don’t need a whole lot.

  • Get a soft cloth, or even an old toothbrush, that works good too.
  • Dip it in the soapy water and rub it real gentle on the dirty spots.
  • If you got some grease or oil on there, put a drop or two of soap right on the cloth and rub that in, but still gentle, you hear?
  • Then, rinse it off good with more cool water till all the soap is gone.

Now, some folks say you can use olive oil and vinegar to clean leather. I ain’t tried it myself, but I heard you mix some olive oil with a bit of vinegar in a spray bottle, spray it on, let it sit for a bit, and then wipe it off. Sounds kinda fancy to me, but if it works, it works. Just remember, no bleach or ammonia! That stuff will eat right through the leather, and you’ll be cryin’ over spilled milk, or spilled cleaner in this case.

If your purse is suede, well that’s a whole different kettle of fish. You can’t just go scrubbin’ it with water, or you’ll have a mess on your hands. What you gotta do is get yourself a suede brush. They sell them at the store, looks like a little stiff toothbrush. And you brush it, real gentle, in one direction. That’ll get the dirt and dust off.

For stains on suede, I’ve heard you can use a special suede cleaner. Ain’t never used it myself, but I suppose it works. Just make sure you read the directions, so you don’t make things worse.

Now, don’t forget about the inside of the purse. That gets dirty too, you know, with all the stuff you carry around. Crumbs and whatnot. Best thing to do is take everything out, and shake it out good. Then you can use the little hose thingy on your vacuum cleaner to suck up all the dirt. If it’s real dirty, you can wipe it down with a damp cloth.

And what about those purses with all the beads and sparkles? Well, you gotta be extra careful with those. Hand washin’ is the way to go, same as the leather, but real gentle, don’t want to pull any of them beads off. Use that mild soap again, and don’t rub too hard.

To keep your purse clean longer, well, the best thing to do is not to get it dirty in the first place! Ha! Easier said than done, I know. But try to be careful where you put it, and don’t go throwin’ it around on the ground. And if you spill somethin’ on it, clean it up right away, don’t wait till it dries.

Another thing, sometimes a purse just gets smelly, you know? Specially if you carry food in it. To get rid of the smell, you can try puttin’ in a little open box of baking soda, or even a dryer sheet. Leave it in there for a day or two, and it should soak up the stink.

So there you have it, a few tips on how to clean a purse. Like I said, I ain’t no expert, but I know a thing or two about keepin’ things clean. And remember, treat your purse good, and it’ll last you a long time. After all, it’s where you keep all your important stuff, your money, your keys, your lipstick, you know, all the things a woman needs.

One last thing, if you got a real fancy purse, or one that’s really expensive, you might want to take it to a professional cleaner. They know what they’re doin’, and they’ll make sure it gets cleaned right without gettin’ ruined. Better safe than sorry, I always say.

Now go on and get those purses clean!
