My Journey with Leather Outfits
Alright, so leather outfits. For ages, I kinda steered clear. You know, I always pictured them on super edgy folks, bikers, or those rock ‘n’ roll types. Not exactly me, who usually lives in jeans and comfy sweaters. I thought, “Nah, can’t pull that off. Too much.”
I remember back in college, there was this one girl who always wore these super tight leather pants. And look, she rocked them, but it just cemented this idea in my head that leather was for a certain kind of person. And that person wasn’t me, who was more likely to be found in the library than at a gig. Honestly, I was a bit intimidated by the whole leather thing.
Then, a few years ago, something shifted. It wasn’t even about fashion, really. I’d gone through a bit of a rough patch with a job I didn’t love. It was one of those office drone situations, you know? Same routine, day in, day out. I eventually left, took a bit of a break, and started trying new things. Small stuff, like finally learning to bake bread (my first few loaves were tragic, by the way) and exploring new hiking trails. I guess I was just more open to stepping outside my comfort zone in general.
So, one day, I was browsing online, not really looking for anything specific, and I saw this really nice, simple faux leather jacket. It wasn’t overly shiny, no crazy zippers or studs, just a clean cut. And I thought, “Hmm, maybe?” It felt like a small rebellion against my old, predictable self. So, I just went for it. Clicked ‘add to cart’.
When it arrived, I left it in the box for a couple of days. Seriously. I was still a bit nervous. Then I finally tried it on.
- First, with a plain white t-shirt and my usual jeans. Okay, not bad.
- Then I tried it over a simple black dress. A bit dressier, but still felt… manageable.
It wasn’t the dramatic transformation I’d half-expected, half-feared. It just felt… cool. In a low-key way.
My first proper outing in it was just to meet a friend for coffee. I was a little self-conscious at first, expecting people to stare or something. But nobody batted an eye. My friend just said, “Oh, new jacket? Looks good!” And that was it. Big revelation: most people are too busy with their own lives to overanalyze your outfit.
After that, I started experimenting a bit more. I realized leather, or good quality faux leather, wasn’t just one “look”.
- A leather skirt with a chunky knit sweater? Surprisingly cozy and chic.
- Those leather-look leggings? Super comfy for errands but a step up from regular leggings.
- Even a leather baseball cap added a bit of an edge to a casual weekend outfit.
I learned that the key was balance. If I was wearing something leather, I’d keep the rest of the outfit pretty simple. No need to go full-on biker unless that’s your actual vibe, you know?
It’s funny, because I remember my mom having this one leather blazer back in the 90s. She wore it to everything. At the time, I probably thought it was a bit much, but now I get it. It was her power piece. And that’s kind of how I see my few leather items now. They’re not for everyday, necessarily, but when I want to feel a bit more put-together, a bit more confident, they do the trick. It’s less about the material itself and more about how it makes you feel.
So yeah, that’s been my little journey with leather. From “definitely not for me” to “hey, this is actually pretty cool.” It’s not about trying to be someone I’m not, but more about adding another little facet to my style. Who knew a simple jacket could do all that, eh?
